Twenty-two months after the second place in Nove Mesto on 14 March 2021, Didier Bionaz, Tommaso Giacomel, Dorothea Wierer and Lisa Vittozzi bring Italy back to the podium in the mixed relay in Pokljuka.

The first medley relay of the season closes the fourth stage of the Biathlon World Cup in Pokljuka which will move next week to Ruhpolding with Norway which, including the Beijing Olympics, is on an open streak of five victories.
The throwing fraction was conquered by the French Fabien Claude (0+1) with a 25 second advantage over Filip Fjeld Andersen (0+3), Roman Rees (0+3) and the Swiss Stalder (0+2). The Belgian Florent Claude (0+0) is at 36.6 seconds, Didier Bionaz (0+2) at 42.6 with the Swede Nelin (0+0).
During the second fraction the wind rises making the shooting range treacherous Quentin Fillon Maillet draws a penalty round on the ground and the only one not to use reloads is Johannes Dale who builds a fifteen second lead over Doll, Finello, Giacomel (5/5), the Frenchman and the Belgian Langer all in the handkerchief of about ten seconds. German, Swiss and blue manage to lengthen the gap with the transalpine in the second lap while Langer falls. Errors flock even in the standing session. Giacomel has to use two reloads but his shooting speed allows him to come out on top with 3 seconds on the French, 9 on Germany, 20 on Switzerland and 35 on Dale forced to a penalty loop.
At the mid-race change, Tommaso Giacomel (0+2) is in first position with a 5 second lead over Fillon Maillet (1+4) and Doll (0+4). The Swiss Finello (0+5) is at 15 seconds, Johannes Dale (1+3) at 40 seconds, Ponsiluoma (1+4) at 45.6.
In the third fraction, a trio with Wierer, Anais Chevalier and the German Schneider takes the lead; at the ground range Chevalier uses only one reload and finds himself in the lead, Aita Gasparin makes no mistake and is 5 seconds away, two reloads for Wierer at 12.1. Behind Brorsson is at 37.1 and Knotten at 48.3 while Schneider has to go through two penalty laps and finds himself more than a minute late.
Anais Chevalier gives everything in the second lap and takes her lead over Gasparin, joined by Wierer, to about twenty seconds and at the shooting range the French and the blue make no mistake with Dorothea who recovers 5 seconds. Two recharges for Gasparin who finds himself at 31.5, Sweden is at 54 seconds, Norway at 1.17.5.
At the last change Anais Chevalier (0+1) launches France into the lead with 32.6 seconds over Dorothea Wierer (0+2) and 45.4 over Aita Gasparin (0+2). Brorsson (0+1) is at 56.9 seconds and Schneider (2+3) with Knotten (0+4) at 1.31.0. Julia Simon and Lisa Vittozzi are impeccable in the floor session and Italy is 29 seconds behind France; Elvira Oeberg made no mistake, making Sweden climb to third position at 52 seconds.
With the podium positions that seem defined, we arrive at the last polygon standing: Julia Simon (0+1) flies towards the victory built by her partner Chevalier, a recharge also arrives for Vittozzi (0+1) firmly in second place with another 5/5 from Elvira Oeberg (0+0) for third place.
At the finish line, France (1+7) won easily with an advantage of 24.6 seconds over Italy (0+7) and 47.2 over Sweden (1+5). Fourth place for Switzerland (0+13) at 1.09.3 with Lena Haecki beating Herrmann in the sprint for Germany (2+11) fifth at 1.09.9. Sixth place for Norway (1+12) at 1.41.2.
