Switzerland says "no" to the Winter Universiade: no competitions in Lucerne from 21 to 31 January 2021

The 30th edition of an appointment that we will hardly see next winter has been postponed due to Covid. And the ISU also upsets the speed skating and short track calendar.

It will be a very difficult winter for all snow and ice disciplines that are rescheduling a 2020/21 season conditioned, as is now clear, by the pandemic linked to Covid-19. Today's news is the postponement, to a later date (but it seems really difficult to think that it will take place in the coming year), of the Winter Universiade scheduled in Lucerne from 21 to 31 January 2021. The restrictions in the territory (as happened recently with the cancellation of the road cycling world championships) led FISU and the organizing committee of Swiss University Sports to raise the white flag for a 30th edition that the CEO of Lucerne 2021 himself, Urs Hunkeler, said to want to save "by examining other periods to reorganize it, also based on the availability of our partners". After Krasnoyarsk 2019 and waiting for Lake Placid 2023, the event involving students from universities from all over the world remains suspended pending better times. However, it was also the day of important decisions within the ISU: as reported by colleague Massimiliano Ambesi, the International Skating Union canceled the first four stages of the Speed Skating World Cup, scheduled between Poland and Norway. , United States and Canada, in addition to the first two of the maximum short track circuit, both in Canada. Nothing certain in the latter case for the December races between Korea and China, but it is assumed that some stages in the Netherlands will be held in the autumn, keeping the athletes in the famous "bubble" which, in many cases, now seems to be the only one salvation of high-level sport.
