Russia: the athletes who take part in the next World Championships will compete under the FIS flag

According to Elena Vyalbe of the Russian Cross-Country Skiing Federation, these measures will affect participants in the Alpine and Nordic Ski World Championships.

Russian athletes from the world of winter sports and beyond are preparing to abandon the flag of their nation in order to participate in world championship events. Last December 17, in fact, the definitive sentence of the "state doping" trial arrived, which excludes Russia for the next two years from the World Championships and Olympics: a decision that immediately led the leaders of the various federations to find enough solutions quick to allow athletes to still take part in the events. Elena Vyalbe, from the Russian Cross-Country Skiing Federation, has announced to the TASS agency that the Russian athletes, who will take part in the next world events organized by the FIS, will compete under the flag of the international federation. "If the FIS had not intervened, we would have entered the competition under the name of" national athletes of Russia "in order to participate" - explained Vyelba. "We will prepare new uniforms, as we will not compete under the Russian flag. These decisions will obviously also affect jumpers and combinatists" - said Dmitry Duborvsky, president of the Russian Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined Federation. Therefore, no Russian flag at the next Alpine Skiing World Championships scheduled in Cortina d''Ampezzo from 9 to 21 February, the same fate also for the Nordic skiing event in Oberstdorf, which will be staged from 25 February to 7 March. However, it is still to be verified whether the name "Russia" will be able to appear on the suits that the athletes will use in the competition.
