Missing the Iranian champion who climbed without a veil in protest?

Elnaz Rekabi has made a gesture that at home on social media have defined historic, courageous, powerful.

The 33-year-old Iranian is among the first women in her country, since the Islamic Revolution of 1979, to have competed without a hijab. It happened in Seoul, South Korea, last Sunday at the Asian Climbing Championships. Her act of disobedience to state laws, which require women to cover their bodies even in international sporting events, is in solidarity with the protest movement born after the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old student of Kurdish origin, arrested on the 13th. September by the moral police for not wearing the veil correctly and died after 3 days. Now there are fears for the safety of even the bronze medal in the combined World Cup in Moscow 2021. The shutter originally from Zanjan, where there is the largest climbing wall in the Middle East, would have disappeared. The BBC claims that her passport and cell phone were seized. His next destination would be Evin prison in Tehran. The Iranian Embassy in Korea says Rekabi would already be flying with the team. In one month, according to sources of non-governmental organizations, more than 8,000 people were arrested in Iran and 240 died, including 32 children. It would be desirable, from the world of sport and beyond, that there is the same international response as in the case of the Chinese tennis player Shuai Peng. In 2017, Iranian chess player Dorsa Derakhshani was excluded from the national team (she now represents the United States) for playing a chador-less game in Gibraltar. In boxing, Sadaf Khadem won an overseas match in shorts, which forced her to move to France. If she came home they would have arrested her.
