Since 1999 Lienz alternates regularly with the other Austrian resort of Semmering (Lower Austria) and hosting a giant slalom World Cup women between Christmas and New Year.

On the slopes near the Tyrolean town the first few races, just a giant slalom, took place in 1969 with the double victory of the U.S. Judy Nagel, then nothing until the two slalom played in 1997 and won both the Swedish Ylva Nowen . Out of a total of eight and ten giant slalom World Cup held in Lienz primatiste the successes, three apiece, are the other Swedish Anja Pärson, one of the poles wide and two narrow between the posts, and the ' Austrian Marlies Schild, all three in the slalom. Italy has won twice, both times in 2007, with Denise Karbon in giant and Chiara Costazza, his only success in the World Cup in slalom.
