Sophie Mathiou is the blue hope to collect something also at the female level in these junior world championships that have already seen Ilaria Ghisalberti close sixth in super-g and Elena Sandulli fifth yesterday in giant. Halfway through the world slalom race in Bansko, the awaited 2002 class of Aosta Valley (already 13 ^ in super-g and 10 ^ in giant) is there, in fifth position just 38 cents from the leader, the Swedish Sara Rask (who has already behind a lot of the European Cup and also CdM) which leads with 3 cents on the American AJ Hurt.
Sophie, who started with bib 15, was very good especially in the second part of the heats, finishing just one tenth from the virtual bronze, the Austrian Hoerhager, with Bostroem Mussener (another very talented Swede) fourth at 30 cents from her compatriot, just 8 in front of Mathiou herself and another American, Zoe Zimmermann. Be careful, however, given that very dangerous athletes are glued behind them such as Magdalena Egger (7th at 39 cents), the giant champion Hanna Aronsson Elfman (8th at 45), Neja Dvornik, bronze yesterday and today ninth halfway through the race at + 0 ”48, and above all the very young Aicher and Ljutic, with the German and Croatian respectively 52 and 64 cents away from the top.
The second Italian in the standings is Elena Sandulli, 15th (with bib 22) at 1 ”42 from Rask, while Celina Haller, who had many top ambitions, left. The second heat will start at 10.30 Italian.
