The history of the last few days regarding the next round of the Men's World Cup, or the two slalom rescheduled Saturday and Sunday in the Salzburg area, is very tormented, right on the slope that hosted the classic night race dedicated to women on Tuesday evening. With what happened due to Covid between the Bernese Oberland and the Tyrol, today the destination of the fifth and sixth rounds between the narrow poles for men has changed again: we will go to the Salzburg area, to the home of Hermann Maier.
Flachau and his “Hermann Maier Weltcup Strecke” have a somewhat troubled history with the CdM, since it is not a fixed appointment apart from the consolidated relationship with the women's circuit. The previous slalom in the men's sector, on the other hand, tells us of five appointments in the last twenty-five years: on 7 January 1996 it was Alberto Tomba who triumphed in Austria, after finishing in 2nd place the giant of the previous day (between Urs Kaelin and Michael Von Gruenigen, whom he will then beat in the Sierra Nevada world race). Beaten Mario Reiter, who finished 2 tenths from the Bolognese ace, and Jure Kosir.
The second blue triumph on the Salzburg track came on December 22, 2004: fourth seal in the World Cup for Giorgio Rocca, ahead of Rainer Schoenfelder (24 cents) and German Alois Vogl, third at 31 cents from Livigno, who had already climbed on the podium in Flachau in the previous season (January 4, 2004), third just under 6 tenths from Kalle Palander, winner of Manfred Pranger, on the day when a very young Manni Moelgg finished fifth.
The cup finals of the 2001/2002 season saw Ivica Kostelic win the slalom on March 9th, with 23 hundredths of a margin over Bode Miller and over a second over the fresh Olympic champion Jean-Pierre Vidal.
Almost 10 years later, the Croatian champion will repeat himself on the track then named after the house idol Hermann Maier, who has retired for 26 months: it is the last time of a men's slalom in Flachau, on 21 December 2011 with Kostelic burning for 7 cents André Myhrer and 9 Cristian Deville, amazing in that season which then led him to the triumph of Kitzbuehel. Sixth place for Patrick Thaler and, speaking of three Azzurri who we will see in the race on Saturday and Sunday and there were that day, 23rd place for Stefano Gross, out in the 2nd heat for Manfred Moelgg and in the first for Giuliano Razzoli.
Gross, Moelgg and Razzoli who, together with Vinatzer, Sala, Tonetti, Maurberger and Liberatore, are preparing the Flachau slalom on the snow of Pozza di Fassa: today the first real training on the "Aloch", which also hosts the Swiss squadron led by Matteo Joris. On Friday, then, the Azzurri will move to the town of Salzburg.
