European Cup, the Orcières-Merlette block ends prematurely: now Folgaria, let's take stock

The planned alpine combined in France will not be staged, considering the weather forecast for the next two days. In Trentino the recovery of the giants on February 2-3, Italy is doing well with Franzoni (now 5th overall) and Hofer especially between the wide doors.

The men's European Cup is continuously adapting to the Covid situation (see cancellation of the Wengen races), but also to the problems related to the weather in the last stages. The giants of Folgaria, rescheduled for Tuesday 2 and Wednesday 3 February, represent the next appointment after the speed races of these days in Orcières-Merlette. Two descents and a super-g, today's one, on the French snow, but no second alpine combined of the season as bad weather is still expected (already today it was hard to finish the third fast race in the transalpine station) for the days of Friday and Saturday and the organization, together with the FIS, ended the stage prematurely. So let's take stock of what has happened so far, practically halfway through the calendar of the continental circuit, on the various rankings that will guarantee fixed places in view of the 2021/22 World Cup. The blue who is aiming most at this goal, participating in practically all the races, is clearly Giovanni Franzoni: today's crash in the super-g of Orcières-Merlette cost the 19-year-old from Brescia the podium in the general, now fifth (but only 7 points behind Weber), with the Austrian couple formed by Lahnsteiner and Haaser increasingly on the run. In the specialty ranking, when only one appointment is missing (at the speed finals in Saalbach), Franzoni himself has dropped to 10th place, more than 100 points from the third necessary for the permanent position and therefore out of the game, with the Swiss Weber driving on Lahnsteiner and Piccard. The blue talent, sixth in combined (the only test disputed in Zinal), is fourth in the giant just 8 points from Rauchfuss, in the ranking led by Alex Hofer with 5 points of margin on Haaser, but in this case there will still be five tests scheduled, starting with the double from Folgaria. In slalom (4 races out of the 9 total) it is possible to play it for Tobias Kastlunger, seventh in the ranking commanded by Laurie Taylor over the French Letitre and his compatriot Major, finally the descent, always with only four tests staged so far, which sees Florian Schieder (not present in Orcières-Merlette having competed in Kitzbuehel) 13th but by now little interest in a classification that sees Lahnsteiner in the lead, with the French Schuller second and the Swedish Sundin third.
