He chose not to retire or enjoy his grandchild by staying at home.
Ferdinand Hirscher was too used to following an athlete for twenty years, in his case a child who grew up and led to win everything and to become the greatest in terms of absolute World Cups. After eight crystal balls alongside his son Marcel, the ski instructor from Annaberg-Lungotz said yes to the Austrian federation that he wanted him in the wake of some guys from the European Cup group.
And within a few weeks, because the work started practically in November, the results are amazing: Patrick Feurstein and Thomas Dorner (both Vorarlberg natives) are the two pupils of Dad Hirscher and, between Tuesday and Thursday, they showed all the own qualities in the giants of the continental circuit in Meribel. The first, born in 1996, scored his first two career victories by literally dominating the first and second heats on the French snow; the second, born in '98, instead brought home a 6th and a 3rd place, for the second podium in the European Cup after the one in the parallel of Kronplatz at the end of December. “Yes, with Ferdinand Hirscher my career is changing - Feurstein told the Austrian media - Especially in terms of knowledge of materials, the jump has been enormous. And then there is the management of the training, the mentality ... on the other hand, he had a decisive role in guiding the one who wrote the history of skiing ".
And in the successes of the Austrian group, there is also the hand of Mike Pircher, the historic coach of Marcel Hirscher who has been supporting the technicians of the Wunderteam lately and was present in Meribel like the good Ferdinand.
And now? Feurstein has become leader of the giant classification in the European Cup (58 points margin on the Norwegian Solheim, yesterday released) and is launched towards a fixed place in the next World Cup, but already on Sunday in Garmisch-Partenkirchen he will have another chance in the maximum circuit, in what will be his seventh race and third of the season, after Soelden and Adelboden when only a disqualification prevented him from taking the first points.
Austria may not have found the new Hirscher, but the story deserves to be followed ...
