The World Cup FIS Alpine reaches its most anticipated weekend. The three days of Kitzbühel is in fact widely considered the most prestigious of a main event. The first race will be the SuperG.

Kitzbühel, the capital of Tyrol, is Mecca of alpine skiing. Documents show that in the Austrian resort disputed skiing competitions since 1894, but it is only since 1931 that opened internationally with dell'Hannenkamm trophy, composed of Downhill, Slalom and Combined. In the second half of the 90s, the FIS added to the classic three races a second descent, called Sprint Downhill since played in two runs on the shortened track. However, the lack of charm and tradition persuaded the federation to replace it permanently with SuperG since 2000, when the youngest discipline of Alpine skiing disputed the second edition on the Streif after that impromptu 1995.
Since then the Super G on Streifalm, so named because the shortened Streif, remained constantly in the calendar of the World Cup and is the prelude awaited descent the following day. In all there are 16 editions held so far in the Super G in Kitzbühel, and the winner of this race is the greatest interpreter of the history of this discipline, Hermann Maier, able to impose itself 5 times among which stands out that of 27 January 2003 which is the first after the motorcycle accident that threatened to break off his career in the summer of 2001.
Besides Maier, one man has been able to repeat in the Super G in Kitzbühel, Aksel Lund Svindal, who triumphed 25 January 2013 and 22 January 2016 held the last edition. Completing the roll of honor Günther Mader, Stephan Eberharter, Daron Rahlves, Marco Büchel, Klaus Kröll, Didier Cuche, Ivica Kostelic, Didier Defago and Dominik Paris.
The South Tyrol is thus the only Italian able to establish itself in the SuperG Streifalm played on January 23, 2015. Three other instead managed to get on the podium, always on the second step: Peter Runggaldier January 16, 1995, Alessandro Fattori January 18, 2002 and Peter Fill January 20, 2006.
Going back to absolute level, Hermann Maier is also leader of the special ranking of podiums, well 7, followed by Svindal and Cuche to 5 to 4. Georg Streitberger has instead the unenviable record of number of podium finishes (3) without being He managed to win.
Finally highlighted Austria's supremacy: of 48 podium places available in 16 editions (actually 50 as in 2008 and in 2014 there were third places ex aequo), the home side have occupied it 28, or 58 %, significantly high percentage. However the victory missing from 23 January 2009, when Klaus Kröll won the first win of his career. Will this year's red and white eagles to stop eight years of fasting?
The Super G in Kitzbühel will be staged on Friday, January 20th. The first out of the gate will be released at 11:30 am.
