It was quite predictable, given that since the pre-weekend, in which the two races were scheduled, raced in truly exceptional conditions, the weather was clear.
Monday would have been the worst day in Bormio and so it was, with the Stelvio invaded by 20-25 cm of fresh snow in the morning alone, but also with reduced visibility and forecasts of a fairly intense snowfall until early afternoon. For Markus Waldner and the competition jury, however, the decision to postpone the men's super-g scheduled for 11.30 was a little less complicated than on other occasions, given that the reserve day set for Wednesday 30 December was already considered a more than probable option, exploiting (as for women in Courchevel) the lack of problems related to spectators and accommodation, since tourism, for obvious reasons, does not exist in Bormio either.
And so super-g set at 11.30 on Tuesday 29, when the weather will be at least stable, and the descent is further moved to Wednesday (initially it should have been played on Monday, before the super-g). A decision that Waldner himself explained to Ettore Giovannelli's Rai microphones. “For visibility it was also feasible (but there was the problem of the rescue helicopter, ed) - the explanation of the chief race director of the men's World Cup - since the snow is cold and did not give problems to the mask. We have experienced more difficult situations, but in the upper part it snows heavily and accumulations on the side are important; race line ok, then, but we could not guarantee 100% the safety of the athletes.
We should have entered with the cats, but we decided not to do it also in a downhill perspective, so as not to ruin the track in any way ".
The forecasts are much better for Tuesday and Wednesday: “Today were perfect, we expected exactly this situation - continues Waldner - It should therefore stop snowing in the afternoon, we will continue to work all night to be ready for the super-g. There will be no sun, but for a track like the Stelvio it is even better not to have the light-shadow change and we will have a good race ”.
