The first World Cup triumph of the 28-year-old American, who dominated the super-g in Bormio (with a gap not seen for 20 years on the Stelvio), hides an incredible story.

Another son of art who wins in the World Cup, certainly not an absolute novelty in the panorama of the white circus. The adventure of Ryan Cochran-Siegle and his family in the skiing scene, however, is quite particular and obviously one can only think back to the mother of the one who today dominated the super-g on the Stelvio di Bormio, that is the Olympian Barbara Ann Cochran who won gold in five circles in the 1972 Sapporo slalom.
Ryan is the first of six grandchildren to win in the maximum circuit (the other 5 are Jessica, Jimmy, Roger, Tim and Robby), part of the most numerous and famous dynasty of skiers, not only overseas, to have presented themselves at the gate in the Circus White.
Grandparents Gordon and Virginia, originally from Richmond, Vermont, did not compete in the classics but were the great precursors of a sort of "Kennedy family of snow". They all got the talent from "Mickey" who played as quarterback and pitcher for his state university, as well as being technical director of Team USA in 1973-74. Together with his wife they taught the way to fans not only of the East Coast. The four children have all participated in the Winter Games and made podiums in the World Cup: Lindy (second in the 1974 Les Gets slalom) is the only one not to have won, unlike her older brothers Marylin, Bob and Barbara.
The latter, Ryan Cochran-Siegle's own mother, won gold in the slalom of the 1972 Sapporo Olympics. For the record, today's winner brought the USA back to success in the discipline after more than 14 years, when Bode Miller triumphed on December 20, 2006 in Hinterstoder). On the Stelvio there was no such gap (0 ”79) inflicted by the monstrous triumph of Hermann Maier, who in the 2000 CdM finals even trimmed 1” 91 to the first of the three teammates he got behind.
To many, the very talented Ryan (double gold medal at the Jr World Championships in Roccaraso 2012, before suffering many physical problems) remembered Bode himself, today in the dive on the Stelvio. “I had studied it well and was able to ski naturally - explained Cochran-Siegle to Ettore Giovannelli's Rai microphones - I was aggressive in the right places and careful when necessary. I felt really good, but in reality it was already like this in Val Gardena ”.
