Saturday, January 21 is the most important day of the season of the FIS Alpine World Cup. On the legendary Streif will in fact staged Kitzbühel Downhill.

The Streif Kitzbuhel is the queen of the alpine ski slope and is characterized by a number of steps that have marked the history of the sport. Are seventeen sectors with which you can split the 3312 meters the most fascinating of the World Cup. The start is located to 1665 meters above sea level, and once opened the gate come the first difficulty: the Startschuss is a chasm that after just 5 seconds brings the athletes to the Mausefalle (mousetrap), a jump of about sixty meters followed by Karussellkurve (or carousel carousel), 180 ° curve in which the centrifugal force reaches 3.1 G which is a prelude to Steilhang, they narrow, counterslope and often more icy point of the track which establishes who can win: the next Bruckenschuss fact, is a long almost flat road that must be addressed with the right speed to avoid unbridgeable gaps.
At the end of the street a slight slope (Gschöss), the diagonal of ALTE Schneise, which coincides with the departure of the SuperG, the Seidlalmpsprung, a place jump exactly half the track, and Seidlalmkurve, a new challenging them as the next Lärchenschuss is in turn relatively easy and little pendant. The Oberhausberg is the slowest section of the Streif and is characterized by the minimum distance between the doors and sharp turns. This is the calm before the storm.
The final part, in fact, is the most difficult, the most dangerous and the most fascinating: the Hausbergkante consists of a jump, from a sharp curve to the left (Hausberg-Kompression) in which the centrifugal force touches the 3.5 G and a cross member (Hausberg-querfhart) with thrilling slopes (69% the maximum) that snowmobiles are able to trace only pulled by a steel cable. The grand finale is in turn divided into three sections: the Zielschuss, which makes touch top speeds close to 150 km / h, the Zielkompression, where the body undergoes the maximum pressure, and Zielsprung famous final jump for causing accidents more or less severe over the years and recently it beveled. The finish line, packed by a crowd from the stadium attending each year to a page of the history of skiing, is placed at 805 meters above sea level.
The first documents testify that in Kitzbühel can be competed in 1894, but it is only since 1931 that the competition is open internationally and since 1967, of course, is part of the World Cup. In all, 81 editions of the Kitzbühel downhill run so far, 76 of which apply to the Hahnenkamm and 58 trophy for the Crystal Ball. Whoever wins on the Streif enters the legend of alpine skiing, and all the greatest interpreters of this discipline - Toni Sailer in Jean-Claude Killy, Karl Schranz Franz Klammer, Pirmin Zurbriggen, Marc Girardelli, from Luc Alphand to Didier Cuche , by Hermann Maier Stephan Eberharter - they have written their name in gold.
The absolute master of the Kitzbühel Downhill is Didier Cuche. The Swiss has in fact imposed for 5 times (January 23, 1998 in a downhill in two runs, January 19, 2008, January 23, 2010, January 22, 2011 and January 21, 2012 when the departure was lowered due to the adverse weather conditions at the end of 'High Schneise) and climbed to seventh overall podium finishes. Follow him to 4 wins Franz Klammer and Karl Schranz and 3 Christian Pravda, Primin Zurbriggen, Franz Heinzer and Luc Alphand. As for the podiums, the rival Cuche is Peter Wirnsberger with 6 top three (2 wins, 1 second and 3 third places).
Besides being one of the winners of this race, Luc Alphand was involved in a historic event: 14 January 1995 for the first and so far only time in 50 years of World Cup, were sailed two runs on the same day and the scene of this event was just the Streif although the start was placed at the second curve of Steilhang. The French had two goals - the only racer able to win two rounds combined on the same day - giving themselves the first victories of his career, a prelude to the three cups of consecutive specialties who conquered between 1995 and 1997. The first of the two races, however remembered for the tremendous fall of Peter Vitalini, escaped unhurt from a flight to the sound of somersaults sull'Hausbergkante started and finished 50 meters beyond the security networks.
Fortunately for the color blue, the Kitzbuehel Downhill is not only remembered for the fall of Vitalini, but also for three wins and 15 podiums. The only success on the Streif true and complete is to Dominik Paris of 26 January 2013; the first to establish itself, however, was Kristian Ghedina 24 January 1998 on a track modified in the final, with the variation that has taken place in the name dell'ampezzano dell'Hausbergkante. Finally, the triumph in the last edition held January 23, 2016 by Peter Fill in a race starting lowered the Mausefalle.
Giuliano Besson also have podiums, second in 1974, Gustav Thöni, the second in the famous race of the three thousandths they did take the penny with which the South Tyrolean ended behind Klammer in 1975, Renato Antonioli, third in 1978, Herbert Plank, third in 1980, Michael Mair third in 1986 and second in 1989, Peter Runggaldier, second in 1991 and third in 1996, Werner Perathoner, third in the second race of 1995, and Werner Heel, the third in 2010. The 82nd edition of the Kitzbuehel Downhill, valid for the 77th Hahnenkamm trophy and 59th valid for the World Cup, will be staged on Saturday, January 21, starting at 11:30 am
