The Gran Risa is also ready to welcome the return of the Alta Badia slalom, which has been missing in these parts for nine years, when Marcel Hirscher took the first of his eight successes in the South Tyrolean town.
On Monday (heats set at 10 and 13, live on Eurosport and Rai Sport TV) here is finally the first specialty race for a World Cup that really comes alive with the beauty of 9 slalom in just over forty days and a double win dream, with Italy hosting an encore on the Canalone Miramonti in Madonna di Campiglio on Tuesday evening.
The winner of today's giant, Alexis Pinturault, drew the bib number 1 for tomorrow's race, with his compatriot (and probably the main favorite, even if it will be a particular race from many points of view) Clément Noel immediately to follow him. With number 3 we will see if Henrik Kristoffersen will be able to erase the difficulties revealed in the giant, with Foss-Solevaag, Schwarz, Zenhauesern (he could very well adapt to a slope with a long final plan) and Yule, who has won three great classics last season, to complete the startlist in the first merit sub-group.
Predictions are really complicated to make, certainly Noel ended last season winning in Chamonix (losing the cup by only 2 points to Kristoffersen's advantage, with the cancellation of the last three races) and restarted immediately dominating in Pozza di Fassa, in the first of the two European Cup events that took place last Thursday. In the second sub-group Matt, Strasser, Haugan himself (on the podium in Chamonix for the first time in his career) and the one who, considering Maurberger's return to the races, is to be considered the true reference of the blue team will not be underestimated.
Let's talk about Alex Vinatzer, the only Italian in the fifteen: the Gardena born in '99 caught 10 and, despite the exit in the first slalom on the Aloch and the impossibility of participating in the second to avoid trouble after the cases Covid in the team, arrives with confidence in these two days already crucial, having soon solved the appendicitis problem accused in November.
There will be only six blues in the race: without Sala and Razzoli hit by Covid, they will try with the n ° 18 Manfred Moelgg in the home race, with the Marebbano already excellent 2nd in CE last Friday, and with the 19 Simon Maurberger, in fact on his debut after the Crusader injury on 9 February.
Stefano Gross will start with 27 and will have a double mission, to score heavy points but at the same time keep the top 30 to avoid a collapse in terms of starting bibs; the Fassano is in condition as well as fellow villager Federico Liberatore, who will start with 39 and well before the last of Theolier's men at the start, the 21-year-old Tobias Kastlunger at the gate with the bib number 65 for his first World Cup race , practically a stone's throw from home.
And it will be a very interesting first heat, the one traced by the Norwegian Witteveen (the second entrusted instead to the Swiss Meynet), given that Atle Lie McGrath, who is also a phenomenon in slalom (remember the 2nd heat of Adelboden 2020, before going out?) and today he gave himself a fabulous 2nd place in giant, he will start with 45, preceded and followed by other very interesting athletes, such as the French Letitre (number 57) who won for the first time in the European Cup in Pozza di Fassa, two days ago right in front of Moelgg.
