Simon Maurberger: My goal is the Cortina World Cup 2021

His name is Simon Maurbeger and he is one of the young athletes of the blue giant and slalom team. Last season he won the European Cup and the bronze medal at the World Championships Event in Are. Now it has the Cortina World Cup 2021 and the Milan-Cortina Olympics 2026 as its objective.

How did your workouts go this summer? Almost everything went as planned. We found good conditions both at Stelvio and at Ushuaia. Now we're trying to finish it all for SÃ¶lden. What kind of work did you do? We focused on the technical disciplines, slalom and giant. I also did a few days of training in super-G with the sprinters in view of the combined ones, but not only. The super-G is a great workout to go faster even in giant. Do you feel better in slalom or in giant? At the moment definitely in the giant because I did more training days in this discipline. After SÃ¶lden I will try to increase the work also in the slalom for Levi. Last season you won the European Cup. What difference do you find between the European Cup and World Cup races? In the World Cup the feeling around us is different. Fans, TV, cameras. Even the tension is greater. Living a World Cup race is a unique experience that excites you. The European Cup competitions, in comparison, may seem almost like ski club competitions. Last season you also won the bronze medal at the World Cup Event Team in Are. Do you like it as a format? Yes, the Team Event has always pleased me personally. He also gave me the chance to participate in the World Cup Finals in 2015 in Meribel. I immediately enjoyed it, because you see the opponent where he is: whether he is at the side, in front of him or behind him. Once you have completed your run you have to wait for your teammates, to cheer. There is a bit of tension for them too. I like it. With the victory of the European Cup, this season you can be part of all the World Cup races. What are your goals? The permanent job in all the disciplines gives me so much tranquility. I don't have to make selections. The goal is to start well already in SÃ¶lden and to demonstrate what I can count in the first race. Who do you see among the favorites in SÃ¶lden? Henrik Kristoffersen, Alexis Pinturult. Maybe even Stefan Luitz. The first two (Kristoffersen and Pinturault) already put them on the podium. Third place can be played. Maybe even the Slovenian Zan Kranjec. You are a young athlete with a long career. What do you think about the Cortina 2021 World Championships and the Milan Cortina 2026 Olympics? The goal of these two years is precisely the Cortina World Championships, to make good races both in slalom and giant. It is also a great pleasure to know that the Olympics have been assigned to Italy, so another goal is certainly that. It would be nice for me to be able to compete at home.
