Super-g Bormio, the chances of recovery. Waldner: "We have to do it before the Olympics, Wengen or Kitz the options"

The reactions to the cancellation of the last race of the triptych on the Stelvio: everyone agrees that it was impossible to compete. The words of the chief race director of the CdM, of the track director Omar Galli and of the blue ds Massimo Rinaldi. We are moving towards inclusion in one of the two historical triptychs (where two descents are already planned).

Bormio had to raise the white flag, fighting against the rain, high temperatures and even the wind that forced the final surrender this morning, due to the cancellation of the second men's super-g on the Stelvio which already represented the recovery of the one skipped at Lake Louise . Clearly, the problem arises linked to recoveries which now become two for the speed sector, given that the twice canceled descent between Lake Louise and Beaver Creek has yet to be relocated (and it will almost certainly be included in the Kvitfjell program in March, bringing the Norwegian races to three); the first and only options concern Wengen and Kitzbuehel, where four descents are planned first on January 14-15 and then on 21-22 of the month, two on the Lauberhorn and two on the Streif. With the "long" week both in Switzerland and in Austria, since three tests are scheduled in both cases, there is the possibility of inserting this super-g since the weekend of Wengen and Kitz will then be closed, on Sundays, from a slalom. The chief race director of the men's cup, Markus Waldner, spoke to Rai Sport in clear terms: “Safety is the priority and today Mother Nature decided, the track would have held up for the top ten at most. We are working on recovery, but we must try to do it before the Olympics, even if January is a very busy month also on the Covid plan and we have to calculate everything. The options of Wengen and Kitz are there, we will talk to the Swiss even if there it is more difficult due to the type of track from ... the motorway ". If in recent years, in fact, we have only seen super-g on Lauberhorn in the European Cup, in Tyrol it would be easier to organize a competition of this discipline, considering the many recent precedents. Omar Galli, track director on the Stelvio, admitted that he really tried everything. “From San Pietro down, we climbed everything, over half of the track, since at the top, despite having rained over 2000, it held up well. The only chance was that the real heat would arrive to make the salting ". "It was a series of natural events in succession - added, also interviewed by Ettore Giovannelli at Rai Sport, the Italian sports director Massimo Rinaldi - After the incessant rain until last night, the track was beaten and resurfaced, at 5 this morning it was in excellent condition after the first inspection. Then the hot wind arrived and the salt was not enough, the whole Stelvio should have been rewetted, but it is a crazy job for which there were no more timings ”.
