The World Cup Alpine Skiing Male remains in Val d'Isere for the weekend already originally scheduled by the calendar. The first test will be a giant slalom set for Saturday.

Val d'Isere, the town of about 1,600 inhabitants, is one of the historical sites of the Alpine Ski World Cup Men. Located in Haute Savoie in fact hosted its first race, one Giant Slalom, in 1968. Since then 94 total trials of the World Cup as well as the World Cup in 2009 and Downhill, Super G, Giant and Combined of the Albertville Olympic Games in 1992 (the slalom is raced in Les Menuires).
The second weekend hosted by the French resort will open with a giant hard on Face de Bellevarde piste which hosted the Giant at the 1992 Games, on which the World Cup in 2009 and all the trials of the World Cup of this specialty have played well from 2008, with the 'exception of last Sunday's race.
Are 27 editions of the overall giant Val d'Isere and are two star players who lead the ranking of plurivittoriosi with 4 hits, Michael Von Grünigen and Marcel Hirscher. However, the Swiss won his triumphs on the Oreiller-Killy, while Austrian has won four of the last five editions played on the Face de Bellevarde. The list of those who have established themselves more than once also are Ingemar Stenmark, Gustav Thöni, Piero Gros and Bode Miller at 2.
The ranking of the podium instead sees four athletes in the lead with 5: Von Grünigen to four hits matched a third place, Stenmark has two wins and three second places, Hirscher has rounded up the four first places with the second of five days ago, while Gros It came first twice, once second and twice third. The only active athletes to boast successes in a Giant played on the Face de Bellevard plus Hirscher are Ted Ligety, who triumphed in the '11 December 2010, and Carlo Janka, the first December 13, 2008 and, especially, February 13, 2009 in race that earned him the 'world gold.
Italy boasts five overall victories in the Giant of Val d'Isere. As mentioned above, four of them were won by Gustav Thöni (1969 and 1975) and Piero Gros (in 1972 and 1974); curiously for both the first win of this slope it is even arrived debut in the World Cup. The fifth, probably the most prestigious, is instead that which earned Alberto Tomba Olympic gold in Albertville in 1992. At the podium level, in addition to 5 Gros, have collected 3 Thöni (two wins and a third place in 1970) and Massimiliano Blardone, second in 2008 and 2009 and third in 2010. Finally, at 2, there Helmut Schmalz, who finished third in 1972 and second in 1973.
The second giant Val d'Isere will be staged on Saturday, December 10th. The first race will start at 9:30 am, the second at 12:30.
