Meeting with FIS for Cortina 2021: work on the world championships continues

Despite the lack of general rehearsal for the World Cup finals, the Ampezzo resort is ready for the big event next February.

The eighth FIS Coordination Meeting took place on Wednesday, obviously in video conference, i.e. the periodic meeting between the delegates of the international federation and the FISI together with Infront, Fondazione Cortina 2021 and the municipal administration of Ampezzo to do the point on the organization of the Alpine Ski World Championships scheduled in Cortina in February 2021. All the different areas of the necessary activity were reviewed, namely infrastructures, operations, sports, sustainability, marketing and communication. The inability to organize the World Cup Finals did not allow to conduct the last, definitive general rehearsal in view of the world championship appointment, but much of the work had already been completed and many tests conducted before they entered into force the restrictive measures envisaged by national and local authorities, such as the arrangement of the slopes, the management of logistics in the finish area and the set-up of temporary structures in the competition areas (Grandstand, tents, telecommunications equipment, containers). In particular, FIS was able to see the completion of essential infrastructures for the optimal performance of the event such as the slopes, from the Olympia delle Tofane to Vertigine and the Lacedelli in Cinque Torri, the construction of the road bypass at Rumerlo and the new Freccia cable car in the Sky, while the works for the adaptation of the Labirinti runway, the construction of the road bypass in the Druscié area, the variant to the Gilardon road network and the construction of the Son dei Prade - Bain de Dones link will all be completed by December 2020. The various scenarios that could arise due to the coronavirus that will inevitably have repercussions on the event were then taken into consideration. Given the uncertain situation on a global level, common to all sports, the Cortina 2021 Foundation illustrated the actions under study for the optimal management of the world championships. The project also envisages the hypothesis of a review of the event's collateral services in view of the possible regulatory restrictions that could lead to a reduction in the expected spectators. FIS itself has agreed on the opportunity to review the overall costs by recommending maximum collaboration with all the entities involved (hoteliers, transport, operators of various services) to face together a problematic reality for everyone. In particular, the management and accommodation of the public assumes an absolute priority for the organization, whose maximum commitment is now dedicated to ensuring the health and safety of all those who will participate in the world championship event: athletes, staff technicians, journalists, volunteers and operators, visitors and local citizenship. In this context, the construction of all the infrastructural part necessary for the correct conduct of the tenders is guaranteed, as well as the implementation of the accessory structures: also in this case, everything will take place in full compliance with the current health measures and with the adoption the social distancing and individual protection measures prescribed by the Health Authorities. However, we are faced with a planetary health crisis that requires us to work in the short term, it is now difficult to make forecasts but we have renewed all our availability for constant discussion with the main stakeholders (FIS, FISI, Infront and our national bodies) to continuously monitor the situation and share an organizational and managerial path capable of reconciling the many and different needs of a major event such as a World Cup in such a particular scenario. Our hope is that Cortina 2021 may be the first and largest international post-covid sporting event, a symbol of rebirth and revitalization for our whole country ".
