The decision on Cortina 2021 or 2022 on Wednesday is the most unexpected world countdown

The FIS council will speak on 1 July on the Italian request for postponement: the "no" of the athletes and the support instead of various federations, the decision hangs in the balance.

Will it be Cortina 2021 or Cortina 2022? For now, the pearl of the Dolomites has only the certainty of the 2026 Olympic Games which, just last Wednesday, celebrated a year of "birth". Next Wednesday, July 1, instead, here is the Cortina 2021 Foundation and all the bodies related to the organizing committee of the next world championships, from the Veneto Region to the same FISI, will play another fundamental game. At stake is the decision, to be ratified in the FIS board foreseen by video conference, whether to move the world championship event that will return to Italy 16 (or 17) years after Bormio 2005 by one year or less. The situation is known: the Italian request that landed in the FIS offices at the end of May is to play the World Cup in March 2022, just after the Beijing Olympic Games, for all the unknowns related to the pandemic which, especially in the event of a second wave from Covid -19 in the autumn, could lead to the cancellation (and not only to the dispute behind closed doors, already quite damaging) which at that point would be worth another million euros in losses for Fondazione Cortina 2021, after losing the World Cup finals last March. The party of the "no" is formed by some federations, but above all by athletes, in truth always little considered by mother FIS; the opinions of the televisions and other leading federations will count much more, see the same Switzerland that has opened the door in this regard for the 2022 solution, through the voice of the director of the alpine skiing sector, Walter Reusser. All open, therefore, as with regard to the management of the whole season: news is also expected in this regard, although in the current state of things we will move towards confirming the World Cup calendar. To be re-evaluated at the end of September, at the subsequent autumn congress in Zurich.
