The organization from Zermatt-Cervinia wants to save its four historic descents scheduled for 29-30 October for men and 5-6 November for the women's sector. Despite the lack of complete preparation of the 4 km of track by the date of Sunday 16 October of the snow control organized by the FIS, in the last hours optimism has increased, thanks to the fact that the deadline imposed by the Federation has been moved to Saturday 22, but also to favorable weather forecasts by next weekend.
Yesterday the race director Rainer Senoner and the president of the organizing committee of the "Speed Opening", Franz Julen, together with the managers of the fast disciplines at FIS, Hannes Trinkl and Raimund Plancker, evaluated the works on the Gran Becca, evaluated well advanced until 300 meters from the finish. As is known, there is no snow in the last stretch towards Laghi Cime Bianche and it will take 2-3 nights at low temperatures to complete the route. "We do not want to leave any stone unturned so that Matterhorn Cervino Speed Opening can start as planned on October 29 and 30 with the men's races and we believe that these six extra days can make a difference for the organizers to conduct the races successfully," he explained. the general secretary of the FIS, Michel Vion.
Furthermore, the preparatory work carried out on and off the track, as well as the favorable weather forecasts, as mentioned, for the end of next week with temperatures expected to be well below zero are decisive for the postponement by the FIS. “We are very grateful to the FIS for this opportunity, they strongly believe in a successful first edition of the Matterhorn Cervino Speed Opening, just like us.
