"Speed Opening", still 10 days before the FIS check: there is confidence, but the track is not yet complete

While for Soelden there will be no problems in terms of snow, for the great appointment of Zermatt-Cervinia we continue to work, hoping for the help of the weather. "Natural snow is needed in the central part of the Gran Becca, but there is still time before October 17".

Just over two weeks for the two very classic giants of Soelden, which next 22-23 October will host the opening of a World Cup that will start regularly on the slope of Rettenbach. The official will arrive next week with the usual FIS check, but everything is ok in terms of snow coverage on the Oetztal glacier. In ten days, however, it will be up to Zermatt-Cervinia to pass the inspection of the International Federation regarding the “Speed Opening”. This is the big news of the 2022/23 season and there is confidence, on the part of the organization led by Franz Julen, to host the two men's descents on the Gran Becca scheduled for Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 October (the first of three tests is scheduled for Wednesday 26th), and the two women's races on the weekend of 5-6 November. Confidence, but at the same time a bit of concern, hoping that in the shadow of the Matterhorn the weather will help on race days, between wind and variable conditions. According to medium-term indications, October is feared to be quite hot and the lowering of temperatures is essential to prepare the entire race track by next 17 October. On the "Blick", colleague Marcel W. Perren asked the director of the men's speed races at FIS, Hannes Trinkl, who admitted that "the help of nature is necessary in recent weeks, otherwise we will not have World Cup in Zermatt-Cervinia ”. At the same time, the marketing director of the Swiss federation, Diego Zueger, explained how "the first part of the track (4 km long and designed by the Olympic downhill champion, Didier Défago) is in optimal conditions, while in the last third of the slope we depend on low temperatures, so that we can produce enough artificial snow. And on the glacier in the central part we need a portion of natural snow since, for ecological reasons, we have decided since the beginning of the project that these passages will not be treated artificially ". In these last days of the week, so much so that we can already organize the training of some of the national teams, the situation is still good and the director of alpine skiing at Swiss-Ski, Walter Reusser, added that "the Zermatt team -Cervinia has done an optimal job so far, for example the crevasses of the glacier have been filled at record speed. Once the weather support arrives, they will be able to prepare the track just as quickly ”.
