"Speed Opening", we are moving towards the confirmation of the races: ready to sacrifice the last stretch of track

On Saturday the snow control was decisive, but in any case we should compete by eventually cutting the last 300 meters of the Gran Becca, as anticipated by the "Blick". No comment by Franz Julen, head of the organizing committee of Zermatt-Cervinia.

The day of truth is approaching, coinciding precisely with the opening of the World Cup in Soelden, when women will be protagonists on the Rettenbach glacier for the first giant of the season. In the same hours, a few hundred kilometers away, in the shadow of the Matterhorn, the fate of the Zermatt-Cervinia “Speed Opening” will be decided, to save the historic appointment with the first cross-border descent in history. As is known, the FIS has moved the snow control on the Gran Becca by six days, which was not yet complete last Sunday in its final stretch, complicated to snow with temperatures that remain very high. Now, however, there is great confidence to compete in the two men's descents (29-30 October, trials starting on Wednesday 26th) and the two women's ones (5-6 November) in the shadow of the Matterhorn. Yes, because the International Federation would also be willing to accept a "cut" of the 4 km long race track, precisely on those final 300 meters that are painful, since otherwise everything is practically ready on and off the track. The "Blick" anticipates this, who in this regard has consulted Franz Julen, great head of the organizing committee of Zermatt-Cervinia: no comment from the person concerned, but it is clear that there is an interest on the part of all to bring home these races, so important for the FIS itself, but above all for an entire territory that has invested heavily in this mammoth project. Of course, then on the days of competition the help of the weather will be needed, with the wind danger in particular, but in the meantime we have to "cross the hill" on Saturday receiving the ok from Hannes Trinkl, responsible for the men's fast cup races. “We will do everything to make snow even on the last stretch - Julen told the Swiss portal - but nature has the last word and is always stronger than man”.
