It is tough, very tough for the regular dispute of the double, historic appointment with the "Speed Opening" of the World Cup, which Zermatt-Cervinia should host on October 29-30 with the two men's descents on the brand new Gran Becca and on 5-6 November with the two women's speed races.
As expected, the FIS has given the organizers more days to try to complete the snow-making process of the 4 km route which starts from over 3800 meters at the height of Gobba di Rollin, and arrives just above Laghi Cime Bianche. The final stretch is the main problem, with temperatures that remain very high and, as Fabrizio Malisan of "Alpine Ski Racing Coach Corner" himself testifies, there is just no snow up there at an altitude of 2800 meters.
All postponed to Saturday 22 October, just the day of the opening of the women's cup in Soelden, with Hannes Trinkl and his men who will carry out the last snow check, just 4 days from the scheduled first test of the men's downhill (training from Wednesday 26 to Friday 28 October, ed). He will have to change something in terms of weather these days to make it, but it is equally clear that everything will be done to save an appointment for which he has invested a lot.
Meanwhile, in the upper part of the Plateau Rosa, the Austrian sprinters, from Cornelia Huetter to Mirjam Puchner, as well as the Germans led by Kira Weidle (and with the new Roni Remme) and Ilka herself began to train today. Stuhec, while several men's teams have been preparing for days on the snows of Zermatt-Cervinia in view of a speed opening which, everyone hopes, can be staged regularly.
