Today's success was anything but expected: in fact, after the jump segment played in the early afternoon, the natural favorite was the rival Rydzek, which could still entertain a glimmer of hope for succeeding in the general classification of the maximum circuit.
Even the present atmosphere in the town of Baden-Wuerttemberg has made it more extreme and legendary: the very low levels of the past few days the snow has melted almost completely and the athletes have raced mainly on mixed water to snowy waste.
At the start of the bottom segment of the tread Tobias Simon appeared immediately in trouble, so much so that the tandem of the most immediate pursuers, made up of the aforementioned Bavarian and Jan Schmid, the recovered twenty abundant seconds within one returned.
Up to half the situation has been stable, with the leading pair having 30 '' margin on the group pulled by Frenzel: the fourth step on the hardest climb of the mini circuit (only 1,450 m) of the thirty-three Tiller began losing the Rydzek rhythm and a few meters further back the Saxon has increased the intensity, skimming his platoon.
Only a kilometer and a half after Frenzel has already reported on Schmid and at the same time reduced the gap that separated him from Rydzek, the latter now in serious difficulty. In another round of spending the Saxon he was hooked to the Bavarian, distruggendogli residual hopes of success.
The seventh and final round was to absolute apotheosis of the keeper of the crystal ball, who crowned the enterprise, already riuscitagli seasonal Lillehammer and Seefeld, to recover the important product separation from the jump test on the younger partner team and detach it relentlessly in the final.
So Frenzel won the 10th win and 18th podium of the season. Because it is the strongest of all time? Simple: he won five crystal balls, 41 successes in the World Cup, two world gold medals and an Olympic; no one has done better and the record of victories in the maximum circuit held by Hannu Manninen (currently stopped at 48) will soon crumbled.
The moment the athlete Oberwiesenthal reached Rydzek, the Bavarian saw immediately fade the success, but the crisis that has suffered - probably more psychological than physical - did not allow him to close the podium and not even in the top five: only in 9th place it crossed the finish line, the worst result of the season still amazing.
Runner-Francois Braud, author of a smart race and a really incisive final: French remained in the wake of Akito Watabe for 9.5 km, for sverniciarlo latter part of the last round. This is the best result of the season for the nordic combined stationed in Chamonix, placed alongside the heavy bronze medal in the World Championships in Lahti.
So the third podium position for the movement of the Japanese leaders who, with the simultaneous 15th place of the unfortunate Fabian Riessle, managed to harpoon the third place in the overall standings of the World Cup. Watabe she wrote an important page in the history of Nordic combined, as it is the first athlete to have concluded for 6 consecutive years in the top 3 in the fight against crystal globe, without ever being able to win it. He also scratched somehow amazing vintage of Germany, preventing it from monopolizing the podium maximum circuit.
Fourth and fifth, respectively, went to Eero Hirvonen currency and Ilkka Herola, the two Finns on the launching pad: the most experienced of the two was the protagonist of a great comeback from the 31st starting position and was able to precede the youngest only 9 lengths in general, preserving the hierarchy within the team.
Following are three athletes who were part of the first group drawn Frenzel: Bernhard Gruber finished 6th, 7th and Espen Andersen Vinzenz Geiger 8th. All these have made it back into the top 10 of the World Cup after some time: the veteran Rot-Weiß-Rot from the stage of Seefeld (29 January), the Norwegian from the Val di Fiemme (13 January) and the Teutonic from the podium of Ramsau ( December 18).
Alessandro Pittin (22 °) has once again set the fastest time in the fund, while Samuel Costa (28th) struggled most. For both the future looks very rosy, especially if the off-season imminent pass without flaws.
Looking forward to the next season, now they got some very important results Pawel Slowiok (17 °) and Laurent Mühlethaler (30 °): have made inroads in the best 55 of the World Ranking List, then give their respective countries the possibility of deploying 3:05 athletes in the opening next autumn.
In summary, in the overall standings of the 2016-17 World Cup Frenzel he finished strong with a 125-point lead over Rydzek and the challenge for third place won the day Watabe of Riessle for only 17 points. Costa ended in 14th and Pittin in 38 th position.
