The Wisła opening speaks German: Eisenbichler dominates in front of Geiger and Huber

After a long wait and amidst a thousand uncertainties in Wisła (Pol) the men's ski jumping World Cup opened. FIS organization and protocol passed the first exam related to Covid-19 and the Nordic disciplines season opened under the best auspices, with two races that gave a great show.

On the eve of the questions that loomed over the inaugural stage of the Jumping World Cup were many and of different nature. From a health point of view, fortunately, there were no hitches and this is undoubtedly a good encouragement for the next stages and for the entire season of the Nordic disciplines, which will come to life next week in Ruka, where Ski cross country and Nordic Combined. On the technical-sporting level, the teams presented themselves in Poland without certainties, both due to the lack of reference points after the almost total cancellation of the summer races, but also due to the few jumps made on snow-covered trampolines. In fact, the hierarchies established last season were respected in the team competition, while the individual competition gave several surprises. In the Team Event Austria managed to replicate the victory obtained last year. Driven by an excellent Daniel Huber and a newfound Michael Hayböck, the Austrian quartet has imposed itself against Germany and Poland, this year without the warm support of the public. These three superpowers, given as favorites on the eve, have made a void against Norway, Japan and Slovenia, never fighting for the podium. After the appetizer on Saturday, the competition got underway with the individual test, at risk of cancellation until just before the start due to a strong head wind, which then gave a spectacular and unpredictable race. In the first series, four athletes, taking advantage of favorable conditions, went beyond 130 m and gained a considerable advantage over their opponents. Lanisek thus preceded Daniel Huber, Eisenbichler and Geiger by a handful of points. In the final, many big names faced a non-performing springboard and there was no shortage of surprises. World Cup holder Stefan Kraft did not qualify in the decisive act, finishing 32nd, while last year’s winner Daniel Andre Tande finished 36th. Conditions remained unchanged also in the second series and so fate played a decisive role in the fight for victory. Markus Eisenbichler, taking advantage of the right compromise between wind and compensation, pushed back well beyond 130 m and obtained an unrivaled score for those who preceded him halfway through the race. The German thus obtained his second career success in the World Cup and capitalized on a weekend in which he proved to be a level above the competition, especially in terms of technical stability. With Eisenbichler the compatriot Karl Geiger got on the podium, coming back from 4th place and the Austrian Daniel Huber, who confirmed the good things done in the team test. The Norwegian Halvor Egner Granerud (4th), the Pole Piotr Zyla (5th) and the Slovenian Anze Lanisek, who slipped from first to sixth place, ended up at the foot of the podium. Of note is the entry into the top 10 of Canadian Boyd-Clowes (9th), with the best result in his career and Hayböck (10th). In a very wind-conditioned race Dawid Kubacki (11th) managed to limit the damage, while Marius Lindvik (24th) and Ryoyu Kobayashi-Kamil Stoch, ex aequo in 27th place, collected the crumbs. Once the Polish stage and the first Covid-19 exam have been archived, the athletes will now enter a sort of bubble and will move to Ruka in Finland, where two individual tests will be staged between Saturday and Sunday.
