Become fifteen world titles in career Marit Bjørgen, ten of which won at the individual level. The race was launched at a rapid pace since the second of the two laps to 3.75 km in classical technique. Heidi Weng and Charlotte Kalla combined with the same Bjørgen and Pärmäkoski, were dropped after about 5 km, and at the time of the change of technique and materials already boasted a top margin to 15 seconds against Anne Kyllönen, the most immediate pursuer.
The leading quartet was split just after half distance, when Bjørgen took the initiative firmly in the first meters in skating. The only Pärmäkoski has withstood the impact, while Kalla and Weng have been losing ground for a whole lap, to slide up to almost half a minute from the head.
If to bring the attack had been Bjørgen last round Pärmäkoski gathered the courage and even attempted a counteroffensive. An epilogue to the sprint seemed to loom until, near the top of the last flight, yet another acceleration of the strongest long-distance runner of all times was fatal to the victory of the home crowd dreams. Less than 5 seconds have separated at the end of the first two.
Further back, a sharp attack at the beginning of the final lap allowed Kalla to get rid of Weng and fly away towards a bronze medal a few months ago seemed totally out of the question. The leader of the World Cup is instead collapsed, and the last kilometer has even the return of Nathalie von Siebenthal, Teresa Stadlober and Yulia Tchekaleva, coming from the private Swiss the fourth.
Astrid Jacobsen finished eighth, ahead of Anastasia Sedova and excellent Masako Ishida.
Italy at home, the best was the 21 year old Catherine Ganz, able to transit in 18th place after the first half, before a Ingvild Flugstad Østberg never in contention for the medals, then finished 25th. Elisa Brocard, Ilaria Debertolis and Virginia De Martin Topranin crossed the finish line in that order between the 30th and 32nd position.
