The Italian side of Passo Pramollo offers one of the most spectacular rings for cross-country skiing enthusiasts in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Located at 1500 m asl close to an alpine pass of extraordinary beauty and undisputed fame, the Austrian ski area of Nassfeld, the cross-country track extends for a good part along the banks of the artificial lake of Pramollo, touching the ski slopes of the Carinthian pole, characterized by an alternation of plateaus, ups and downs and curves with exciting changes of direction. The slope managed by the Val Gleris Pontebba Amateur Sports Group, being located at a high altitude, is generally well covered with snow, and is usually open to the public from November until late April.
The itinerary has a length of about 3.75 km and is characterized by uphill and downhill stretches that alternate quickly one after the other, immersing the cross-country skier inside the fir woods, until after passing under the walls of the dam of the lake you go face the lower part of the track.
From here the route continues with alternating sections of short climbs and descents with curves and changes of direction that put even the most experienced cross-country skiers to the test. The final part, uphill, runs along the road and brings the cross-country skier back to the starting point on the lake shores.
Beyond the technical characteristics of the route, what is most striking about the Passo Pramollo itinerary is its complete exposure to the sun and the wide variability of dream landscapes that surround it. In fact, you pass from the rocky peaks of the Gartnerkofel to the meadows that surround the lake, without forgetting the woods whose trees are most of the time covered with snow.
