Assosport: "The winter season for the Italian sport industry ends with a decidedly positive balance"

Even before it began, they had already renamed it the ski season of the "restart" and now that it is drawing to a close, it is finally possible to draw up an initial assessment of its actual performance. From March 2020 and until the end of 2021, the Covid emergency had effectively eliminated all activities, imposing a prolonged and very heavy closure for the economy of the sector. Hailed as the year of rebirth, 2022 did not disappoint expectations and, net of some critical issues, it is notable for the decidedly upward trend compared to the last two years.

"We are very satisfied with the trend of the season - says Corrado Maciò, President of Pool Sci Italia and Director of Assosport, the National Association of sporting goods manufacturers for over 120 companies in Italy, 300 brands, 9,300 employees and an aggregate turnover of 4.5 billion euros - More or less all companies are talking about rewarding results. After all, we had been coming for two years of "darkness" and the desire to get back on track had already made itself felt in the autumn, when we reopened the orders, with a significant demand for products from the shopkeepers who then actually sold most of the goods, including those left in the warehouse during periods of forced closure. Also noteworthy is a good increase in the demand for entry level equipment, a sign that old-time enthusiasts are gradually being joined by a new group of skiers eager to discover winter sports ”. Even the Association of Cableway Entrepreneurs (ANEF) has drawn up an overall positive report of the season, especially if compared to the initial prospects: the physiological decrease in attendance compared to the pre-covid era, in fact, this year settled between 2 and 10%. «Covid has blown up many schemes - Macci continues - and now the conflict in Ukraine places us in front of new challenges. The unknowns linked to energy price increases and supply difficulties prevent us from making any predictions for the future, because the variables involved are too many and unfortunately all unpredictable. We can only hope that the situation will improve and that next year it will continue to rise like this one. Undoubtedly it was an "anomalous" season, characterized by fluctuating flows: we witnessed an incredible peak in attendance at Christmas, followed by a sharp decline in January due to the worsening of infections and a new recovery between February and March, but the final balance invites us to be optimistic ». Another push to restart was given by reflex, just between February and March, even by the Winter Olympic Games. "The media coverage of the Olympics - Macci continues - has certainly rekindled the interest of Italians in winter sports, helping to raise awareness of disciplines such as curling, which are traditionally less popular. However, the fact that the games took place at night was a bit penalizing. From this point of view, we have high expectations for Milan-Cortina 2026 which will represent an unmissable opportunity for our companies ". In this regard, in recent weeks the Milano Cortina 2026 Foundation and Confindustria Servizi have signed a Memorandum of Understanding that will lead the country towards the next Olympics with the aim of stimulating companies to get involved in order to fully exploit the enormous potential offered. in terms of marketing and visibility, from competition. Therefore, if on the one hand companies look to the future, on the other hand they reap the fruits of the goals they have just achieved. The world championship event in Beijing awarded our sport industry with 40 medals, of which 13 gold, 12 silver and 15 bronze, divided into the various disciplines. "Once again the sports system companies, which I have the honor to represent, are the winners of an international competition. - declares Anna Ferrino, President of Assosport - It is a great result and the testimony that Made in Italy exists and works ". Several companies associated with Assosport that have "competed" in China. These include well-known names such as Briko, Cober, EnergiaPura, Dainese, Extreme Winter, Gabel, Kask, Mico, Rudy Project, Salice and Tecnica Group. A survey, recently conducted by the Department of Economics and Business Sciences of the University of Padua among the companies associated with Assosport, showed that half of the companies called to respond to the survey are active for more than 50% of the shares in which it is It is possible to decline the commitment with a view to "social and environmental sustainability" with virtuous practices implemented throughout the production chain ranging from the reduction of emissions (56%), to the reduction of the use of chemicals (55%), passing for the containment of waste (33%). "It is the tangible sign that the Italy of sport is already far ahead in terms of ecological transition and that the choice to play the next Winter Olympics in Italy could not have been happier". - pointed out the President Ferrino. The renters were also satisfied with the season, which in a survey conducted by the Prowinterlab observatory showed that 80% of those interviewed said they were satisfied with the season just ended, defining it as average or even above expectations.
