Il Fatto Quotidiano unveils the definitive project for the Cortina gut that will host the competitions of the Winter Olympic Games. The ending of the historic "Eugenio Monti" will change a lot.

A track, the one that will host the Olympic bobsleigh, luge and skeleton competitions, which has been debated for years and now seems to have reached its complete definition, but not without an enormous increase in costs (almost 25 million euros) and the problems that, on an environmental level, they will probably continue to be talked about.
“Il Fatto Quotidiano” has published the entire project regarding the Cortina gut which will be one of the crucial points of the 2026 Winter Olympic Games.
According to when reported exclusively by the newspaper, for almost 3 years a project was conceived and then completely redone, given that the track was too fast, with excessive gravitational accelerations. It turned into a sort of roller coaster, with a power system to create the ice that will use ammonia, despite what was officially declared.
The new "Eugenio Monti" will not have the same route as the 1956 Games, but will propose 17 curves with a course that is certainly very spectacular and whose final project has now arrived on the table of the Services Conference, made up of local administrative bodies and those who they supervise compliance with the plans and restrictions that weigh on the area of the Dolomites.
THE NEW PROJECT
The documents of the Cortina gut bear the signature of the designer, the German engineer Uwe Deyle of the company Planungsbuero Deyle GmbH based in Stuttgart and which from Turin 2006 to Beijing 2022 was responsible for the main facilities for the Olympic bobsleigh competitions, sledding and skeleton. The sole person in charge of the procedure is the engineer Alessandra Grosso, manager of the Veneto Region, while the German prosecutor is Eng. Ludovico De Lotto.
The first project involved remaking the “Eugenio Monti” as it was, on behalf of Coni Servizi and developed in 2019 at a pre-feasibility level. Last November the federations (internationally) contested a problem regarding the maximum speeds and gravitational forces at play in the lower part of the course.
Now the changes are significant, with the introduction of an eight-shaped chicane and the length of the track that goes from 1495 meters to 1512, with the track as a whole ranging from 1982 to 2001 meters. "After the Cristallo curve, a solution is proposed that draws a different final stretch of the track with respect to the historical track, making a complete turn on the side behind the climbing wall and crossing the track twice after the Cristallo curve and the Antelao curve - reads the document signed by the designers - This solution has a much less significant effect than 'option 1'.
According to the simulations carried out, the flyover obscures the background of the peaks of the Ampezzo valley; in the second case the impact is less evident, even if the snake of ice and concrete is still impressive, with an excess of 11,160 cubic meters of earth, 2,322 cubic meters more than the 8838 of the first solution. Costs? According to the report of “Il Fatto Quotidiano”, it goes from the 61 million euros initially planned up to 85. And time is running out, with the construction to be completed by 2025 for the necessary tests.
