The Board of Directors of the Organizing Committee of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Olympics and Paralympics met this morning. The Board of Directors, chaired by the President Giovanni Malagò and in the presence of the stakeholders and CEO, Vincenzo Novari, defined some important news regarding the venues which will host the 2026 Winter Games. Following an in-depth working session, the Council approved, with a unanimous vote, three innovations which, in terms of importance and relevance, will mark a fundamental step in the Road to the Games towards 2026.
The first decision concerned the location of the Paralympic Opening Ceremony: the event, initially planned at the PalaItalia Santa Giulia in Milan, will be celebrated in the splendid setting of the Verona Arena which will already be the venue for the Closing Ceremony of the Olympic Games. This decision, in line with the principle of also economic sustainability, will allow a significant optimization of the structures and a consequent containment of costs. The second modification to the Paralympics Master Plan concerns the Para Cross Country and Para Biathlon competitions; the competitions, initially planned in Valdidentro, will in fact be held in the Val di Fiemme cluster.
Once again the Board of Directors of the Milano Cortina 2026 Foundation, the International Paralympic Committee and the Italian Paralympic Committee have shared the common decision to let Paralympic athletes compete within the same competition venues used during the Olympic Games. This is a formal passage which, in addition to confirming the communion of intentions and strategies between the Foundation, IPC and CIP, strengthens the principle of inclusion that lies at the heart of the Paralympic message and further optimizes some items of expenditure.
Finally, the Board of Directors has also established the venue that will host the ski mountaineering competitions, the new Olympic discipline that focuses on the relationship between sport and sustainability, between man and nature, and which will make its debut at the Milan Winter Olympics. -Cortina 2026. The Board of Directors, in compliance with the indications of the International Olympic Committee regarding the need to host the new discipline in one of the Olympic sites already included in the candidacy dossier, has identified Bormio as the venue for hosting the Skimo competitions, thus enhancing further the area of the Alta Valtellina as a sporting scenario of great prestige. “What has just ended - commented Giovanni Malagò, President of the Milano-Cortina 2026 Foundation - was a very important Board of Directors for the decisions that were taken and, above all, for the way in which the discussion took place.
I found, once again, the concrete communion of intent on the part of all the stakeholders who have always recognized, in the questions posed, the theme of the sense of responsibility and credibility that our Foundation must pursue in every decision to be taken. I would like to express my personal thanks to all the Institutions represented on the Board of Directors, from the Regions, to the Municipalities up to the Autonomous Provinces, because the choices of Bormio, Verona and Val di Fiemme are the demonstration of our ability to work in synergy with the others for the realization of the 2026 Games.
