Nestled at 1,815 metres above sea level on a natural terrace in the Valtournenche valley, Chamois is a small Alpine village surrounded by woods, pastures and mountains. It is the only Italian municipality on the mainland that cannot be reached by car: it can be accessed by cable car from Buisson or via trails and mule tracks. The wooden and stone houses, traffic-free streets and silence enveloping the village give the resort an atmosphere very different from that of the more popular ski areas.
The ski area offers 16 km of alpine skiing pistes, extending between the 1,812 metres of the village and the 2,499 metres of Colle di Fontana Fredda. From the highest point, there is a fine view of the Matterhorn, the Grandes Murailles, the Cheneil basin and the slopes of Valtournenche. The ski area is compact and predominantly sunny, with descents that cross open, panoramic slopes in the upper section before returning through larch woods, mountain huts and small rural settlements.
Uphill access is provided by three two-seater chairlifts arranged in sequence: Corgnolaz–Lago Lod, Lago Lod–Teppa and Falinère. The lifts are neither modern nor particularly fast, and reaching the highest point requires several changes, but queues are generally limited thanks to the ski area's low visitor numbers. Two magic carpets serve the beginners' area near Lago Lod. The Buisson–Chamois cable car is the only mechanised access from the valley floor, and there is no piste allowing skiers to descend all the way to Buisson.
The main pistes are of intermediate difficulty and follow two downhill routes from Colle di Fontana Fredda towards the village. Fontanafredda offers a succession of sweeping turns and changes in gradient across wide, enjoyable terrain; once Lago Lod is reached, Assetaz allows skiers to continue to Chamois's central square. The Libera and Charavellesaz pistes complete the offering with several variants, but the number of runs inevitably remains limited.
The Lago Lod area is the focal point for children and beginners, thanks to the magic carpets, the Baby Lago piste and the presence of mountain huts and restaurants. Once beyond the ski school area, however, there are not many easy alternatives: the ski area is therefore better suited to those who already have the skills needed to tackle intermediate pistes. Experienced skiers will not find any true black runs or a wide variety of technical terrain, but they can appreciate the natural terrain, off-piste routes and opportunities for ski touring.
A large part of the pistes is covered by artificial snowmaking, an important feature given the ski area's sunny exposure. The quality and extent of the opening can nevertheless vary depending on natural snowfall and water availability: in less snowy seasons, it is not always possible to make all the runs skiable quickly.
Chamois is not the destination for those looking for many kilometres of pistes, fast lifts or a week devoted entirely to alpine skiing. It is particularly well suited to families, intermediate skiers and people seeking tranquillity, who appreciate uncrowded pistes and an Alpine environment that has remained untouched by traffic. Its value lies less in the size of the ski area than in the overall experience: arriving by cable car, crossing the village on skis and descending from Colle di Fontana Fredda to the square of a car-free mountain village.
