Champoluc Monterosa Ski

The local Champoluc-Frachey ski area offers around 27 km of pistes, extending between the 1,587-metre starting point of the Champoluc gondola and the 2,705 metres reached at Colle Sarezza and Bettaforca. The sector therefore has more than 1,100 metres of vertical descent and forms the westernmost part of the large Monterosa Ski circuit.

Champoluc, Gressoney-La-Trinité and Alagna Valsesia are linked on skis across three valleys and two regions. The Monterosa Ski pass provides access to a total offering of 180 km of pistes, including the main circuit and the satellite resorts. From Val d’Ayas, you enter the Gressoney Valley via Colle della Bettaforca; from there, you can continue towards Stafal, Passo dei Salati and Alagna. To complete the entire itinerary, it is necessary to set off early and check whether the connections are open, as they may be suspended in strong winds.

There are two access points to the pistes in Val d’Ayas. From Champoluc, the modern eight-seater Champoluc-Crest gondola, rebuilt in 2018, reaches the Crest plateau at approximately 1,980 metres in just a few minutes. From Frachey, slightly further uphill, the fast funicular takes you to Alpe Ciarcerio, providing direct access to the Mandria sector and the connection to Gressoney.

The local lift system comprises 11 lifts: two gondolas, one funicular, four chairlifts and four magic carpets. The lifts from Champoluc and Frachey are modern and fast, as are the automatic Alpe Mandria and Bettaforca chairlifts. The Alpe Ostafa-Colle Sarezza and Lago Ciarcerio-Alpe Belvedere chairlifts, on the other hand, are fixed-grip lifts and are slower, especially when moving between the different sectors.

Most of the pistes are suitable for intermediate skiers. From Crest, the gondola ascends to Alpe Ostafa, from where you can reach Colle Sarezza. The Ostafa 1 and Ostafa 2 pistes are wide and panoramic, while the Sarezza, Sarezza Variante and Sarezza-Contenery runs feature changes in gradient and more technical sections. The long descent to Champoluc passes through the forest and offers more than 1,000 metres of vertical descent, making it particularly enjoyable when the snow retains good quality at the lower elevations.

In the Frachey sector, the pistes served by the Alpe Mandria chairlift are generally wide and flowing, with runs such as Del Monte, Pian de la Sal and Dei Larici. The Liaison leads towards the Bettaforca chairlift, from the top of which you can descend on the Gressoney side. The Bettaforca pistes are exposed at altitude, highly panoramic and interesting for skiers who are confident on red runs, but they can be affected by wind and poor visibility.

Beginners will find the most suitable areas at Crest and Alpe Ciarcerio, where there are nursery slopes, magic carpets and short runs with gentle gradients. After their first lessons, they can tackle the easier blue and red runs at Crest, although moving on to the main descents requires a reasonable level of technical confidence. The Crest area also has a snowpark, with features whose opening and layout may vary during the season.

Expert skiers will not find many groomed black runs, but they can enjoy some of the steeper sections on the descents from Sarezza, the Ciosal run and the more demanding variants. Val d’Ayas also offers numerous freeride opportunities, with routes between Sarezza, Ciarcerio, Bettaforca and the side valleys. To leave the marked pistes, avalanche safety equipment, adequate preparation and, on the more complex routes, the accompaniment of a mountain guide are essential.

The layout of the ski area allows you to choose between days spent on the Champoluc and Frachey pistes and long tours towards Gressoney and Alagna. The weak point is represented by some less direct connections and the presence of slower chairlifts on the routes between Ostafa and Ciarcerio. The return to Champoluc also descends to a relatively low elevation and, on warmer days, may have more transformed snow than the higher sectors.

In summer, the lifts at Champoluc and Frachey provide access to Crest, Cuneaz, Mascognaz, Alpe Ciarcerio and Bettaforca. From these locations, there are family walks, hiking routes and more demanding trails towards the mountain huts and side valleys at the foot of Monte Rosa.

Champoluc is recommended above all for intermediate skiers who enjoy long red runs, sweeping panoramas and the opportunity to explore a different valley every day. Beginners and families have good learning areas at altitude, while experts will find the greatest appeal in the vertical descents, technical variants and off-piste routes throughout Monterosa Ski.
