Turned into the investigation of the tragedy of the Stresa-Mottarone cable car which saw 14 people lose their lives. The brake had been deliberately deactivated.

After a 12-hour confrontation with the plant's employees and technicians, Luigi Nerini, director of the Ferrovie del Mottarone company that manages the plant, Gabriele Tadini, director of the service and Enrico Perocchio, head of service were arrested tonight in Verbania.
The three admitted that they had deliberately deactivated the brake to avoid interrupting the service on a day that expected a good influx of tourists. The so-called "fork", a device that has the task of deactivating the emergency brakes of the cable car, was deliberately inserted to avoid disruptions and blockages of the cable car.
To the microphones of Buongiorno Regione, on Rai Tre, the officer of the Carabinieri of Verbania, Alberto Cicognani, said: "Was the brake not activated voluntarily? Yes, yes, they admitted it. There were malfunctions in the cable car, maintenance was called, which did not solve the problem, or only partially fixed it. To avoid further interruptions to the service, they have chosen to leave the '' fork '', which prevents the emergency brake from operating ".
It also emerged that the Mottarone cable car had been traveling in that way for several days and had made several trips.
The arrest was ordered by the prosecutor of the Republic of Verbania, Olimpia Bossi, who coordinates the investigations of the carabinieri with the prosecutor Laura Carrera.

Mottarone
Il Mottarone, alto 1.492 metri, sorge in una posizione privilegiata tra il Lago Maggiore e il Lago d’Orta. La sua vetta arrotondata è uno dei balconi panoramici più spettacolari del Piemonte: nelle giornate limpide lo sguardo abbraccia sette laghi, la Pianura Padana e gran parte dell’arco alpino, dal Monviso al Monte Rosa fino alle montagne svizzere. Questa cornice, più che le dimensioni del comprensorio, rappresenta il vero elemento distintivo della località.
