Four-man bob silver champion Benjamin Maier retires at just 28

The announcement is made by the Austrian Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation "For us it's a bitter loss"

A little surprise yesterday, the best Austrian bobsleigh driver Benjamin Maier decided to retire from competition. Maier won silver in the four-man bobsleigh at the last world championships in Altenberg behind the great Francesco Friedrich. "As an athlete he already has several years on his shoulders but in terms of age he could easily reach the next Olympics. It's a bitter loss for us, ”said Wolfang Stampfer, coach of Bob's Austrian national team. On the other hand, Maier has achieved prestigious results in his career including four medals at the European championships and 18 Cdm podiums divided between the two-man bobsleigh and the four-man bob, albeit without ever achieving a victory. At the Olympic level he has competed in three reviews where the fifth place in the two-man bobsleigh in China is the best result. On that occasion Maier in economic difficulties, was helped with a noble gesture by Francesco Freidrich who sponsored him during the exhibition. Finally, it should be noted that the real motivation for Benjamin Maier's retirement is in wanting to study medicine and pursue a professional career in the sector.
