Of course it will all be different, without an audience and with the constant Covid nightmare, even for the athletes themselves who could risk seeing the season go up in smoke due to a positivity in the heart of winter.
And yet, finally, more than seven months after that 7 March in which the men's World Cup ended prematurely in Kvitfjell, while women do not compete now since the super-g of La Thuile on 29 February. And it will be the girls themselves who will inaugurate, as usual, the 2020/21 vintage with the giant of Soelden, scheduled for Saturday with the 1st heat scheduled at 10.00 (traced by Gfeller, Norwegian coach) and the second ( drawing by our Simoncelli) at 13.00, both live on TV on Eurosport 2 and Raisport.
A special opening for everyone and with many dreams and above all concrete goals for a women's national team that is compact and very strong, with its three stunning points that respond to the names of Federica Brignone, Marta Bassino and Sofia Goggia. The Aosta Valley, holder of the absolute crystal ball and that of a giant, will start with bib number 6, but there should be no problems on a polished Rettenbach, despite the snowfall of today and towards a day, that of Saturday ( and even more on Sunday for the men's race), with clear skies and very low temperatures.
The first to leave the starting gate will be the returning Wendy Holdener, who recovered after the fracture of the head of the right fibula in early September, then here is a Marta Bassino pounding with the bib number 2, she already splendid third in Soelden in 2016 and never so continues as in the last season. With the number 3 she who, in the absence of Mikaela Shiffrin at least for this start of the cup, could immediately become a reference and the great rival of the blue, or Petra Vlhova who has prepared herself well and will go to the assault of the absolute World Cup , looking for heavy points since this first race.
Tessa Worley, who won here in 2018, will have the 4th and will start just before Alice Robinson, the winner of last year (in front of Shiffrin and the same Frenchwoman) and also of the last giant played in CdM, in mid-February in that by Kranjska Gora, and precisely Brignone, with Mina Fuerst Holtmann (great fourth one year ago, before touching success in Courchevel as well) who will close the first sub-group.
