It is not an easy year for Federica Brignone, who has not yet rejoiced in the post-triumph season in the World Cup, but has nevertheless taken two second places in the giant (behind Bassino and Shiffrin between Soelden and Courchevel) and two thirds in super -g, in Val d''Isère and Crans-Montana.
Of course, the gap from the top of the overall (and the games for the Aosta Valley are closed also for the giant and super-g cups) occupied by Petra Vlhova is substantial, 352 points which also considering the other rivals in the middle, suggests how the 'seasonal goal become exclusively the world championships in Cortina.
As she explained herself, the physical condition is good and convinced her to bet, also because the team needs an all-round multipurpose in this world championship, on all the individual races scheduled. Barring any changes in the race, Fede will be the workaholic of the World Cup, with six assaults on medals and two great opportunities at the start. The alpine combined is clearly a very important goal: the 30-year-old from La Salle has won the last four disputed in the World Cup (including 3 in Crans-Montana), but the 6th place in Are 2019 was bitter.
In super-g it did not go very well in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, but it will be another race on which to bet strongly, before the downhill tests towards the race on Saturday 13 February. There will then be a couple of days to recover before the parallel on Wednesday 16, and here anything can really happen and the chances will not be lacking (thinking that in Lech / Zuers, Fede was about to eliminate the future winner Petra Vlhova), two days before of the giant on Thursday 18, preceded by the team event that the Aosta Valley will miss, and of the slalom on Saturday 20 in which there is the will to participate, with the other three athletes certain of the bib who are Irene Curtoni, Peterlini and Della Mea.
It is curious to note how the world champion will be staged 10 years and a day after the one who, on February 17, 2011, saw Federica Brignone win her first and so far only medal in a world championship (right at her absolute debut! ), silver only 9 cents from the title brought home by Tina Maze. Fede then went out in slalom and, after having missed the Schladming 2013 event due to injury, he participated in giant (exiting in the 1st heat on the bump at not even half of the track) and slalom (he took a 19th place) at Beaver Creek 2015, to then conquer the beauty of the top ten set in his last seven world races, without however returning to the podium.
At Sankt Moritz 2017 he was eighth in super-g, seventh in combined, fourth in giant and 24th in slalom, while two years ago Are was equally bitter, with tenth place in super-g, sixth in combined and fifth in giant.
Cortina may represent another career turning point.
