Cortina 2021 - World Market: a super-g to be experienced, with the return of Shiffrin, the favorite Gut-Behrami and Bassino who

Today (13.00) what becomes the first world race: we make the cards at an appointment that sees the Ticino, winner of the last four specialty races, clearly ahead in the prediction. Italy with 4 points, the "historian" of the US, Tippler and Scheyer 's Austria, loose mines, the "L" factor and much more.

It was supposed to be the Alpine Combined, but it will always be the girls but with the single appointment of the super-g on the Olympia delle Tofane, to open the world championship in Cortina 2021. So here is our world market on the race scheduled for today at 13.00 and opened by an ... Italian couple. Marta Bassino as regards the bib n ° 1, Giovanni Feltrin as regards the tracing. It is no coincidence that the first number for "Bax" was chosen (the Cuneo was the sixth to be able to draw her own number, with 13 and 1 available in addition to obviously 15, 17 and 19), considering that snow conditions could soon lead to a deterioration of the runway. It is a courageous choice, undoubtedly, because the '1 is always an unknown in this discipline, but except for the two days of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, we can say that Bassino is now a certainty even in super-g and is certainly one of the medal candidates. Who starts in front of all in the prediction? In this case, there is a clear name and it is Lara Gut-Behrami's; the Swiss champion has conquered, indeed dominated, the last 4 super-g of the World Cup, remaining off the podium only in the opening of Val d''Isère. It's true, the Ticinese has never won a title in major events (with 5 world medals and one Olympic), but she is confident as perhaps never before in her career, she loves Cortina where she has won twice in super. -g, in 2014 and 2018, and a downhill one (2017), and can adapt to any track and snow conditions. It will be a national team with four "real" points, if we think of Elena Curtoni's historian in super-g, even if the Valtellinese struggled this year in her favorite sport, and in 4th place obtained in Crans-Montana by Francesca Marsaglia. Clearly, together with Bassino, the "captain of the day" is Federica Brignone, the only one of the Italians competing to have CdM successes in super-g (3) and already twice on the podium in the season between Val d''Isère and Crans-Montana, with a double third place. Will the Valle d'Aosta succeed Isolde Kostner, 24 years after the triumph of the Val Gardena (last in super-g for Italy) in Sestriere 1997? In the next few hours we will know ... In the lot of the main favorites we cannot fail to include Mikaela Shiffrin: it is true, the American champion has put together practically 4-5 days of training in this discipline (also from a combined perspective), but her immense class and the feeling with the '' Olympia delle Tofane, in addition to a good bib number 10, makes the 68-time cup winner one of the most dangerous women. Mika won the last super-g disputed, in Bansko on 26 January 2020, she is the reigning world champion and, just a few weeks before that world championship race in Are, she had won in Cortina without even having competed in the tests of descent in the previous days. You do a little bit ... Then there is the "L factor", or rather the Ledecka-Lie duo (starting with numbers 11 and 13): the Czech is the reigning Olympic champion, she is capable of everything on the dry race and was the the only one to win a super-g this season, in Val d''Isère, without being called Lara ... The Norwegian, on the other hand, has just returned from the two best races of her career, second and fourth in the two rounds of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, she has no particular pressure and will be a real loose cannon. It is difficult to consider in front of them athletes like Corinne Suter, who only touched on success in the seasonal debut on the "Oreiller-Killy", despite also making the podium in Sankt Anton, or the other Swiss Michelle Gisin, who did not never gave the impression of being able to fight for the top 3, at least this year. And Austria? The tip is unquestionably Tamara Tippler, who has chosen a low number (3), has not yet won in the CdM but is constantly in the podium area, as in the last Garmisch race ended in third place. This year's Stephanie Venier gives no guarantees, pay attention to the young Raedler (who also caught an excellent n ° 8) and above all to Christine Scheyer, blocked by the knee in the second SG of Garmisch, but 5th in the two previous races of specialty. Among the outsiders we include the French Gauthier and Worley, who showed Garmisch important things but risks paying the bib number 20, and of course Petra Vlhova (starting with the 15). You will say, the Slovakian finished in 2nd place the last super-g in Bavaria, but she is at the first experience on the Olympia delle Tofane and an experience, in general in the discipline and even more so on this track, decidedly less compared to rivals. Surprises? Attention to Grenier and Weidle (they will start however on 27 and 29), even if the German could become more dangerous than anything else for Saturday's descent, as well as Ilka Stuhec who today will "taste" the World Championship starting with 26, but without particular ambitions also considering the season experienced so far by the Slovenian.
