The star is back in the lights of Levi, even if it will be necessary to wait for Saturday to make it shine, when the first of the two slalom on the snows of Lapland will mark the return of Mikaela Shiffrin.
During the day the US Ski Team formalized the call-up for the specialty opening, with four athletes engaged on the Levi Black alongside the Colorado champion, back in the World Cup 300 days after that super-g won in Bansko and all that happened in the following weeks and months.
With Mika there will be Paula Moltzan, capable of a splendid top ten in giant in Soelden and then winner also in slalom in the FIS in Solda, where compatriot Nina O''Brien (in turn 15th on the Rettenbach), who will also compete in Levi, as well as veteran Resi Stiegler and 25-year-old Lila Lapanja, last season winner of the slalom ranking in the Nor-Am Cup.
The attention, useless to deny it, is however entirely directed to a Shiffrin who has returned from two weeks full of work at Copper Mountain, dedicated completely (or almost) to slalom, after the stop before Soelden and a decidedly reduced summer-autumn preparation and who Mikaela will risk paying, in view of the World Cup, especially in fast disciplines. Speaking during the day with the media, the 25-year-old from Eagle said she was ready for Levi's two races (where she won 4 career times, ed), but with "few expectations after all that happened in the previous months, to me personally and in general for all athletes with the pandemic. I don't expect anything special, but I want to ski well. If it doesn't go well, I'll work even harder to get back fast ”.
Returning to last season and that bitter ending, without even the chance to compete in the three final tests of Are after having decided to try it following the death of his father, Shiffrin defined the successes of Brignone and Vlhova "more than deserved, given that they skied very well all season ”. Speaking instead of the back problem announced as the reason for the forfeit in Soelden, the American confessed that “this is a situation to manage for the rest of my career. The doctors told me that by competing on the Rettenbach that weekend, I could have worsened the injury, while rest and adequate preparation got me back on track. I'll have to live with it and manage it ”.
