The return of Cortina to the World Cup, the FIS is ok after the snow check: 22-23 January are the key dates

Three years after the last time (in the middle the cup finals lost due to Covid and the 2021 World Cup), the Olympia delle Tofane returns to host the top female circuit with a downhill and a super-g. The most awaited woman? Obviously Sofia Goggia, who in 2018 ...

It is a return, even if in the calendar of the Women's World Cup it is a fixed stage and only special situations mean that Cortina d''Ampezzo has not seen races of the maximum circuit staged for three years. Today the FIS carried out the traditional snow check, just under two weeks after the event, in the pearl of the Dolomites: green light for the penultimate speed stage before the Beijing Olympics, as there will be on Olympia delle Tofane a downhill and a super-g, Saturday 22 January (10.00) and Sunday 23 (start at 11.45), with the first test scheduled for Thursday 20. The cup finals of March 2020, never played due to a pandemic, had meant that Cortina did not host competitions that winter, the same last season with the world championships scheduled for February. World champion event that Sofia Goggia had to miss due to the bitter injury suffered a few days earlier in Garmisch and, ironically, even the last cup races held in January 2019, the blue champion saw them from the outside, since she would have returned to the circuit only a few days later (in Bavaria), following the fracture of the malleolus remedied in the previous October. The most awaited woman of the Cortinese weekend will be the Bergamo woman, who in 2018 won the first red bib of her career on the Olympia delle Tofane (which she wore until the end of that season), winning the first downhill ahead of Lindsey Vonn and Mikaela Shiffrin, for a simply royal podium. The latest winners in Cortina are Ramona Siebenhofer, who triumphed in the two descents of 2019, and Shiffrin herself in the super-g that closed the three days in Ampezzo.
