It was the first weekend of February and, during a training session on the friendly snows of Folgaria, Mikaela Shiffrin's life changed in an instant.
After a training on the track, the queen of the white circus was called to another commitment, that of posing for Sports Illustrated, she chosen by the well-known American magazine as the first cover athlete although not participating in the 2020 Olympic Games and not even in the World Championships . Then the phone call from Brother Taylor, announcing to her and Mum Eileen the tragic accident occurred to Dad Jeff, the race to Munich to board the first plane to Colorado and the world that stopped for Shiffrin for several weeks, well before Coronavirus emergency worldwide.
Mikaela herself revealed yesterday, as her "assignment" on the cover of Sports Illustrated ended at the end of March, what happened between the Saturday and Sunday of that 1-2 February, while the white circus was busy to Rosa Khutor. "I was so excited about this project, but life works in strange ways and the day we did this photo shoot in Italy was the same one when my brother called us after the accident with dad. When the cover came out in February, my mind was on other things, but I want to thank the SI team who did a fantastic job.
Reading the words of Ingemar Stenmark and Bode Miller was splendid, but even more moving was the way in which Greg Bishop (the journalist who dealt with the editorial phase of the service, ed) described my father's spirit and the values that my parents sent. "
