Time for decisions, even if the slalom of the world championships, which will close the world championship in Cortina on 21 February on the new “Drusciè A”, is still several weeks away.
Chamonix looms, with the eighth and ninth round of the World Cup between the narrow poles for men, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday on the Verte des Houches, certainly not the ideal track for this discipline, but in any case decisive for the summons of various national teams that have yet to dissolve their reservations, including the blue one.
Of course, the pieces of the puzzle must be put together thinking about the entire contingent for Cortina 2021, but it is certain that there will be four boys at the start of the world slalom and, in fact, the doubt is linked to the last bib to be assigned.
Alex Vinatzer, in fact, despite the five consecutive zeros in January, is the only blue in the first group (even if at least one result is needed in Chamonix to save him) and, with the 4th and 3rd place of the super debut seasonal between Alta Badia and Campiglio, is absolutely not in question as well as Manfred Moelgg. The captain of the national team has risen more and more in level from Adelboden to Flachau, always being the best blue, and then seizing the first top ten with the great 8th place of Schladming.
And there are also few doubts about Stefano Gross's presence in Cortina: after a difficult start, with only 8 points collected in the first 4 slalom of CdM, the 34-year-old from Fassa has conquered a 19th, a 16th and a 16th in the last three races. 14th place between the two races in Flachau and “his” night race.
Five athletes remain to play for the last world pass: Simon Maurberger probably starts with a slight advantage, in case everyone gets little or nothing from the two races in Chamonix. The '95 class of Valle Aurina struggled after an encouraging return after injury (28th and 23rd in the two Italian slaloms), taking home only 18th place in Adelboden in the last five races, but has regained quality for some sections race, while still making a lot of mistakes.
Similar speech for Giuliano Razzoli: skip Badia and Campiglio due to Covid, the Olympic champion (always called up for the world championships, even in the most difficult periods such as Sankt Moritz 2017 and Are 2019) put together only the 26th placement in Zagreb and the 21st in the second slalom of Flachau, but in the first heat of the opening round in the Salzburg area he was really traveling very fast, before going out.
Tommaso Sala, also out due to positivity for the two opening slaloms, finished 24th in Zagreb and returned very well, then slipped four zeros between exits and non-qualifiers. Then there remain Riccardo Tonetti, who may have chances despite being dry this season, but having played only three races with Adelboden (where he qualified very well, wasting everything in the 2nd heat) and the two of Flachau: the Bolzano player will return to Chamonix , where last year it took a nice 19th place. Finally Tobias Kastlunger (considering Federico Liberatore is out due to back pain), closer to his first top 30 in Schladming, but clearly still immature at these levels. However, should he sign the surprise in France, then there would also be space for the 21-year-old from Marebbano.
