We are not talking about a young person, being a class of 1978, but there are those who have made the opposite path: we are talking about Samuel Sanchez, an athlete who has written pages of history on his bicycle and has now decided to immerse himself in the world of alpine skiing. decisively, competing in the Masters category. The former Basque runner won the five-circle title in the road test of the 2008 Beijing Olympics by beating Davide Rebellin (who was later stripped of the silver medal for a positivity to banned substances), but was for over 15 years a great all-round protagonist, from five stage victories at the Vuelta up to second place in the general classification in the 2009 Iberian stage race, up to the place of honor at the 2010 Tour de France (he was fourth on the road, but the podium came after the disqualifications of the winner Contador and the Russian Menchov).
Almost 4 years after his retirement, which took place in 2017 following a controversial positivity, Sanchez told MARCA about his new adventure on the snow, he recently became a ski instructor and with this sport in his blood, having "learned to ski even before ride a bicycle. In the family, skiing has always been our sport ”.
The Olympic champion thus participated, last weekend, in the Spanish championships dedicated to Masters, finishing in 5th place the giant on the snows of Sierra Nevada. “For next season I already plan to dedicate myself to slalom and compete regularly in the Spanish Cup events, where I hope to fight for a medal.
I'm pretty good in fast disciplines, but now I want to work well on the slalom technique ”.
