An extraordinary duel, unfortunately decided daring manner. Skiathlon champion in Lahti, Sergey Ustiugov and Martin Johnsrud Sundby have staged a new act of defiance that had inflamed the last Tour de Ski. To prevail was once again the Russian, facilitated by the fall of the Norwegian - with adjoining breaking a stick - at about one kilometer from the conclusion.

The two main protagonists of the season flew away around two thirds of the race, at the beginning of the second of four laps of 3.75 km in free technique. It took a few hundred meters to realize that the action would be decisive.
The script would have liked at that point a Sundby attack to avert a sprint that would see him clearly disadvantaged, with Ustiugov defensively. The Russian has instead enhanced the challenge with a defiant attitude, not sparing the counter attacks forcing the Norwegian.
The margin over his pursuers took over soon unbridgeable proportions, giving way to the two to catch his breath at times before the grand finale. The mouth of the final climb, Sundby tried to emulate Marit Bjørgen, which on the last day of the slopes had got rid of Krista Pärmäkoski in the women's trial. After a few meters, however, the Norwegian lost his balance. It took no time to get up, but the breaking of a stick, and the latter lost as a result for replacement have effectively sealed the victory Ustiugov.
Norway's disappointment is mitigated in part by the double medal. Silver Sundby has in fact added, a few seconds later, the bronze Finn Haagen Krogh. The 26 year old native of Upper prevailed in a challenge for the podium which involved, until the last ascent, a dozen athletes. Among these was a Giandomenico Salvadori able to exceed the most optimistic forecasts: only the latest ramps blue lost medals train, still defending the way a precious tenth from the assault of the square Andrew Musgrave. For the 24 year old financier is the best career result in a top-level competition.
At the foot of the podium stood Sjur Røthe, ahead narrowly Alex Harvey, Didrik Tønseth and Marcus Hellner. Slightly detached Andrey Larkov and Lari Lehtonen, best of Finns. He has indeed disappointed the home crowd Matti Heikkinen suffered a bad day, and stood still in 18th place.
The other two Italians in the race - Sebastiano Pellegrin and Sergio Rigoni - have concluded respectively in 27th and 45th position.
