Prowinter 2023: the optimism of ski rentals towards the season that has just begun

In view of the Prowinter exhibition appointment, scheduled for 11 and 12 January 2023, the world of rental companies in the mountain sector has expressed its forecasts for the winter season that has just begun. The data collected by ProwinterLab on the ski rental network in Italy show a generally positive sentiment, albeit with the critical issues that are characterizing the world of procurement and distribution of sports items.

Prowinter 2023, the reference B2B exhibition event for the mountain sports sector, makes an appointment for the rental segment on Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 January 2023 at Fiera Bolzano. Waiting to meet again in the exhibition corridors, the Prowinter Lab team, coordinated by Alfredo Tradati, conducted the usual survey on a significant sample of renters to sound out expectations relating to the 22/23 season that has just begun. The first particularly interesting figure, especially when compared with the uncertain previous years, is that over 90% said they had bought new products for the current season: in detail, over half renewed 20/30% of their ski fleet and boots, and accessories such as helmets and poles were renewed by around 15%. Respondents in the sample were asked if they had any problems with deliveries, and 89% said they had experienced delays with existing orders for the current season. A known situation that has not only affected charterers but also shopkeepers, two important players in the winter mountain ecosystem, who often coincide in the same commercial structure. Delays and postponements of deliveries which undoubtedly depend on the new supply chain scenario which requires earlier planning times, starting with the confirmation of purchase orders: 53% of the interviewees declared themselves against the advance orders imposed by companies (at a time of the year when it is very often premature to make a decision) and 36% would prefer to have more time but understand the new market dynamics. As in other sectors of the economy, even in the sports rental sector the difficulty of finding qualified personnel remains: 66% of the interviewees motivate the refusals by the candidates with the scarcity of the offer (62%), the unavailability on -end (49%) and the lack of interest in seasonal work (36%). The sector was also affected by high bills with 59% of rentals declaring a significant negative impact on the business, but fortunately only 12% described the situation as dramatic. In all cases this condition led to an increase in rental price lists in 85% of cases (half of the increases equal to 10% compared to last season). Furthermore, with reference to the cost of the ski passes, 61% of the renters do not believe that the price increase affects the presence of customers, and in the same way also the bookings for Christmas seem to be average for 82% of the rentals (only 7% declared a decrease). The analysis concludes with a look to the future: 58% of rentals estimate a turnover for winter 2022/23 in line with last season; a 29% decrease and a 13% increase.
