BES
Due to the health emergency, the BES thought of a ruse to allow students to ski during school hours.

The project promoted by BES (Bilingual European School), located in the Niguarda area in Milan, is called "Ski in City", which gives students the opportunity to take ski lessons in the courtyard during school hours thanks to a Neveplast synthetic material set up in the courtyard of the institute.
The track is made of synthetic material and thanks to the patent of the Bergamo-based company Neveplast that created it, it allows you to simulate skiing on natural snow to the limit of reality. 30 meters long and 10 meters wide, the track has a gradient of 10%.
Enough to satisfy beginners and younger children who will learn the ABC of skiing at school, but also to entertain students who already practice winter skiing and compete.
Neveplast was born with the mission of making skiing and winter sports accessible to everyone, regardless of latitude, seasons and weather conditions. And it does so by clearing the ski right in town.
The concept of Urban Skiing, Neveplast's workhorse, was immediately shared by BES which called the courageous educational project “Ski in the city”.
The first ski lessons began on Tuesday 9 February, given by specialized ski instructors who mostly live in Milan and who this year, with the ski resorts closed, have not yet had the opportunity to work in the mountains.
The bilingual school has 540 students, ranging from BAPS - British American Pre school - to middle school. On the basis of a busy schedule drawn up with scrupulous attention to the health protocol, each student will have the opportunity to have at least two didactic experiences on skis.
The track will be active at least until spring, and then it will be considered whether to extend the ski season.
The ski school field is located in the school garden: an open space with a Nordic architectural imprint where a climbing gym will soon be operational. A mountain cabin-style kiosk has also been set up next to the slope where, at the end of the ski lesson, students can drink a hot chocolate.
On Friday 12 February, the former Italian champion and champion Giorgio Rocca, a friend and admirer of the bilingual school in Milan, will be on the track with the students of the BES. Many young people who ski with the Giorgio Rocca Ski Academy are enrolled.

They are lucky kids because in addition to coming to ski with us, they now also have the opportunity to ski in the schoolyard during school hours. I have known Neveplast for some time and I share with the Bergamo-based company the importance of clearing customs for skiing in urban environments to broaden the pool of mountain and winter sports enthusiasts ".

The “Ski in the city” project is perfectly in line with the mission of the BES which has always been identified in an environment in which to grow and educate students in courage, resilience, and the will to overcome limits. The attitude which in English is called risk taking and which in BES is a dogma.

The students had to give up on-site teaching for months first, then the trips and many activities they were used to. In BES, skiing is a very popular sport and we were very sorry that our boys could not ski this winter. The 'Ski In the City' project was a real surprise for our students and families. We notified the parents of the initiative only a few days ago: we informed them that the children should have come to school with their ski equipment because there would be a surprise. I will never forget the disbelief mixed with enthusiasm on the faces of children and parents when they saw the track set up in the garden on Monday morning ".
