Mayors and governors present at the closing press conference. On June 24 in Lausanne the decision in the big challenge with Stockholm

The week of visit of the IOC evaluation committee for the candidacy of Milan Cortina to the Winter Olympic Games of 2026 ended with the press conference at Palazzo Marino, in the heart of Milan. The international delegation led by the former rugby player Octavian Morariu and Christophe Dubi, executive director of the IOC Games, applauded the work of the Italian team, led by CONI President Giovanni Malagò, Secretary General Carlo Mornati and representatives of the cities and regions. The Mayors of Milan and Cortina, Giuseppe Sala and Gianpietro Ghedina, together with the Governors of Lombardy and Veneto, Attilio Fontana and Luca Zaia, were present at the conference that was preceded by the survey revealed by the IOC and linked to the approval of the candidacy, which confirmed the enthusiasm perceived by the delegation during the visit. 83% of Italians interviewed, in fact, are in favor of the candidacy, a satisfaction that grew in the first months of 2019. The President Malagò - from the top of this important feedback - expressed the satisfaction of the working group at the end of a week of visits, started in Venice and closed in Milan, after passing through Cortina, Anterselva, Baselga di Pinè, Tesero, Predazzo, Livigno and Bormio.
"For the first time two cities put the names and the face in this candidacy - the words of the number 1 of CONI - We started some time ago with a surgical logic: we studied and identified the best conditions so that our country could be competitive to host Olympic Games. The end result was to combine two fantastic regions and we proposed a special mix, a peculiar combination of beauty and tradition. Objectively these our realities represent a Unicum in the world panorama. I thank all the partners and our wonderful group: we have 5 stakeholders, a very strong team, in Italy it is not common to find this unit and I am proud of this and the support of the Government, which has been convinced day by day about this type of bid at low cost that at the same time decided to use 100% of the opportunities offered by the 2020 agenda. We have chosen to go where there are already venues that have made the history of individual disciplines, considered among the best in the world such as Anterselva, Val of Fiemme and Cortina, combining them with the tradition of other locations. Italy has shown a tradition of hosting international events and we hope that this tradition will continue with Milano Cortina â€.
Positive feelings confirmed by the words of the President of the IOC Evaluation Commission, Octavian Morariu: “We are satisfied, the candidacy is built on the dictates of Agenda 2020, which aims to reduce costs and optimize sustainability. It is an extraordinary project, the Italian team has put a lot of passion into it, has been able to exploit and enhance the great experience it has. All this makes the candidacy of Milan Cortina very solid â€. Finally, great optimism and positivity emerged from the speeches of the mayors Sala and Ghedina and the Governors Fontana and Zaia. During the week we will return to work in view of the next steps. A presentation of the candidacy in conference call with Brisbane is scheduled for May, where the 17th GAISF Summit will meet. Another key step in view of the designation of the city to host the 2026 Winter Olympic Games: the decision will arrive on June 24 at the IOC session in Lausanne.
