The Austrian Olympic Committee withdrew the candidature of Graz for the 2026 Winter Olympic Games.

In today's afternoon, as reported by skiweltcup.tv, it was announced that the citizens of Styria would vote by referendum the yes or no to the Games on 23 September. An hour later, Mayor Siegfried Nagl said that Graz, Schladming and the winter sports communities felt abandoned.
This is the statement of the Austrian Olympic Committee: "Because of the current political discussions, the ÖOC must note with regret that a clear political commitment or support from the Government of Styria, considered by the OCOC since the beginning to be mandatory, so far there has not been.In such circumstances a project of this size is not feasible and difficult to accept internationally.The job interviews in progress are terminated, so as not to incur additional costs ".
"We are sorry that our top athletes and winter sports enthusiasts can not have this unique opportunity, the Olympic home games, in the near future," said ÖOC President Karl Stoss and ÖOC's Secretary General, Peter Mennel. An adversary less then, however, rather authoritative at least in theory, for the Italian candidate who will be chosen for the White Games that will be played in eight years.
