Innsbruck's candidacy for the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Games was canceled by the referendum held yesterday in Tyrol.

53.35% of the voters in the 279 municipalities in the Austrian Land rejected this application, which would require a simple majority to move to the next stage of the trip. They voted 58.43% of the righteous, 313681 out of 536817, voted no in 166594, voted yes in 145.643, 1444 votes were invalid.
This is just the last defeat of a European resort candidate to host a Winter Games edition. In November 2013, the Monaco Games for Games of the Year 2022 were rejected, a few months earlier, in the Canton of Graubünden, when the joint application of St. Moritz, Davos and Zurich was dismissed for the same Games.
Impressive the result of the vote in Innsbruck where 67.41% of the 45711 voters expressed their no. In St. Anton (Alpine Skiing), Hochfilzen (biathlon) and Seefeld (nordic skiing) the result was favorable, given 85.12%, 80.71% and 65.40%, while at Kühtai (snowboard and freestyle) they won with 56.26%. The capital cities of Reutte, Kitzbühel, Schwaz and Lienz also voted against the offer.
The defeat is doubly blunt because it had been announced that all existing installations would be used. CIO Chairman Thomas Bach has already expressed his hope that the event will return to a traditional winter sports nation, as the next two editions of the Winter Olympics will be held in Asia.
