Selling tickets for PyeongChang2018? For now a flamboyant flop

The first stage of ticket sales for the PyeongChang2018 Olympic Games ended today. The organizing committee had to admit that so far purchases are far below expectations.

Indeed, from February to today the goal was to sell 600,000 tickets, but only 380,000 requests arrived. As if that was not enough, much of it was done for the most popular ceremonies and sports in South Korea. So there has been excess demand for some disciplines, especially those of ice, while many others have gone substantially unnoticed. Translated, a few drawings had to be drawn for a few (few) events, with a lot of other appointments being hardly considered. It follows that the first phase ended with only 162,000 tickets sold, equal to 27% of the hoped for. From AFP's point of view, it was necessary to make the draw for short track, figure skating and speed skating - so they start off to the full - while the less popular sports are cross country skiing and biathlon, for which they have been sold Only 10% of the tickets made available to the public. The organizing committee plans to sell 1,180,000 tickets, but only 30% of them were destined for foreigners. Therefore, success largely depends on the indigenous viewers. In this regard, a recent sports ministry survey revealed that only 35.6% of Koreans are interested in the Winter Winter Games at home and just 9.2% of them intend to go to the field to attend the races. The second phase of sales will open in September. According to the organizers Koreans are a people who tend to make many purchases of the last minute, so there is some optimism. It remains to be understood whether it is justified or facade.
