Here is the review of our user albi.sangio in the La Thuile area. Having gained about twenty years of skiing experience in La Thuile, I think I can say that I know every meter of every runway in the Espace San Bernardo district ... Here below are 2 possible itineraries; keep in mind that, wherever one is, he can reach the country without needing to use ski lifts; so .. there is no risk of getting lost, just follow the track that goes down lower !!!

ITINERARY No. 1 From the arrival of the gondola, located in Les Suches (2200m), put on your skis and head left towards the Chaz Dura Express chairlift. The chairlift lasts about 7 minutes, and arrives in Chaz Dura at an altitude of about 2550m. From there follow as if to go towards the Piccolo S. Bernardo (it is easy to find directions, just follow for France). At this point, after a short stretch of transfer, we reach Col De Fourclaz; here you find yourself at a crossroads. Continue to the right for what looks like a mule track; at the hairpin you must begin to set the egg position, since the following section consists of a long straight on a slight slope with a fairly steep climb to the end. From here begins the runway n ° 7, the longest of La Thuile (it measures about 11km). It is a very wide track, little pending but also little frequented, ideal both for those who are not very familiar with the snow and for those who, on the contrary, go fast (an excellent track to do a bit of superconduction). From the start, continue along the track until you reach a fork in the road; at the junction turn right (there are signs). At this point you will find another fork in front of you that indicates two variants of the same track: 7A and 7B. They are two homologous tracks; the 7A in the final has an egg-like trait in which, if you get stuck, you make a huge effort to continue. The 7B instead has a last stretch that tightens a lot that ends up slipping into a small but quite steep gully. At this point you have reached the start of the Fourclaz chairlift; once again following the signs, continue on the summer road of the Piccolo San Bernardo State Road. Also this section after the chairlift must necessarily be made as an egg, since it is a long slight slope. From here continue on the main road until almost in the village. At the end we cross the final wall of two black tracks (2 and 3) that descend into the village, which however can be safely avoided by continuing with the variant. The track is red, from beginning to end, and is available to everyone; furthermore you can enjoy the view of M.Bianco for all the way here. ITINERARY No. 2 The famous slope No. 3 Franco Berthod. From the start you must immediately face a small wall, quite steep, which can easily be done by an average skier. The problem comes after the first wall; concluding this last one in fact you find yourself in front of a real step (I highly recommend to stop before facing the 2nd wall and to observe well the structure of the same). The average slope of this second wall is 73%, and an aggravating circumstance is that this stretch is almost always in the shade, so the snow tends to freeze. This 73% stretch is short, because then the track continues with another wall which, however, seems to be flat. At the end of this 3rd wall it is possible to continue on the 3rd going straight (the foolish difficulty as you descend), or turning to the right crosses the runway n ° 2, another black descending into the village . This second route is the one that will be used for the European Cup races this year. This second track is a classic black one, with an average slope of about 50% almost never frozen that makes its way through the woods to the town center. Track 3 is made up of 3 variants: - The 3 Franco Berthod, which forces the skier to face all 3 walls I described earlier - The 3 medium, which starts slightly lower and avoids the first wall (the one with the slope to the left), but that leads to the step with the wall at 73% - The low 3, which starts much lower than the other two and which comes out exactly at the end of the wall at 73%. The Berthod and the 3 media are only for expert skiers, the low 3 can be tackled by everyone (a variant is also available that leads to the slope No. 7. PS La Thuile is a very very cold place, especially towards January for which, if you want to ski in the District ... cover yourself as if you were going to the Polo! The cold can be endured, the wind can't!
